Reiji Azuma, the teenage hero of the dark, game-based adventure Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom (2009), awakens in a half-ruined building in the California desert, stripped of his memories. A mysterious girl named Ein has been assigned to teach him how to kill, using pistols, machine guns, and knives. Reiji learns fast: in six months he becomes the assassin Zwei, killing people for the criminal cabal Inferno. When the theatrical Scythe Master leads a revolt within Inferno, Zwei becomes The Phantom, the mob's top hit man. Reiji takes up with Cal, a blonde orphan who's eager to become a killer in her own right. Requiem for the Phantom is comprised of three story arcs, all of which suffer from underdeveloped characters, inconsistencies of time, too much on-the-nose dialogue, and absurd plots. Even after he regains his memories, Reiji's not very interesting; Ein's murderous blandness makes Key the Metal Idol seem downright vivacious. Cal somehow goes from wide-eyed moppet to murderous vixen in the two years that elapse between episodes 19 and 20. Despite the body count, which must run well into three figures, Phantom moves at a glacial pace. Director Koichi Mashimo tries to disguise the lack of inertia with odd camera angles, but he's defeated by the endless succession of static, talky scenes. Shooting mobsters may be evil, but boring them to death seems needlessly cruel. The set comes with two discs of extras, including 12 "Picture Dramas," weird spoofs involving still artwork and hand puppets of the characters. (Unrated; suitable for ages 17 and older: violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, profanity, ethnic stereotypes, nudity, drug dealing, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

5.0 out of 5 stars If You're A Fan Of Anime Series Like Noir Or Madlax This Is Another Good Choice For You Jan 28 2011

While watching the series I couldn't help but see the similarities a little between this series and another series I have Noir. You have two trained young and highly skilled partners who have trained themselves to be extremely efficient assassins for their employer or shadow cabal that they take their orders from. Of the two main characters you have Ein or Phantom as she's called by the criminal underground is a young efficient assassin who has no memories of her past and knows no life other than what her trainers have given her, she usually is only called to commit a selective killing of an enemy her keepers want to eliminate but due to an unexpected situation she winds up with a young man in the area and instead of killing him her trainers decide after feeling he might have skills they can use to keep him alive and start training him to be an elite operative like Ein. The young man once awake also realizes he has no memories due to his new keepers after Ein explains it, and now he only has one choice to become their newest operative or die. The series shows the two going through their various missions but along the way they begin to question their missions as well as whether or not they must truly live the lives forced upon them by their heartless keepers. The series will show us the situation when they duo try to take control of their own lives from the keepers who have tried to keep them on a leash, the series is exciting, somewhat humorous, and tragic. If you're expecting some kind of fan service treat like with series Sekirei and Ikki Toussen than you will be disappointed, also on that note this series is pretty hardcore nothing to gory but definitely not for young kids. The series set is a little similar to another series Sacred Blacksmith an that the first set has two dvds inside two thinpack cases put into a sturdy cardboard case, the limited edition piece is a necklace with a aluminum bullet(At least that's what mine felt like) the second part of the series is pretty much the standard two dvds put inside two thinpack cases put into a paper case sleeve. The voice cast for both the Japanese and English cast did their roles very well and the animation and soundtrack are also well done and again if you're a fan of Noir you might hear how the music is almost like that series as well as the animation. So while pricey this series is a great choice for any hardcore action anime fan out there or just any anime fan who likes a great series...

It has action, suspense and you will want to keep going....But i will be perfectly honest, I bought this without looking at other websites...If you want a good website to get DVD's for VERY CHEAP try going to [...] You can get full seasons/series of DVD's for like $15 but if you want it on Blu Ray then you might want to stick with amazon or other website.
