Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Sandra Boynton, long heralded for her menagerie of animal characters (Moo, Baa, La La La; Rhinoceros Tap), puts a fresh cast of singing, dancing critters center stage-from the titular boogying chickens to a tail-wagging "snuggle puppy"-in Philadelphia Chickens, a book-and-CD package billed as an "imaginary musical revue." The first 32 pages contain lyrics and illustrations, the second half of the book includes musical notation and additional lyrics for each song. An all-star cast, including Meryl Streep, Laura Linney, Eric Stoltz and the Bacon Brothers, headlines the musical recording, which features a variety of original show tunes penned by Boynton and composed by Boynton and frequent collaborator Michael Ford.

Book Description

What an event! What a show! It's catchy and quirky. Tuneful and toe-tapping. Exuberant, unexpected, and utterly endearing. It's what happens when you take America's beloved illustrator and children's author and combine her buoyant genius with some of the most talented people on the stagepresenting Philadelphia Chickens! Created by Sandra Boynton, Philadelphia Chickens is a family musical in a book, bringing together a full-color songbook of 17 1/2 illustrated story-poems with a full-length, fully orchestrated CD of original songs performed by the likes of Patti LuPone, Kevin Kline, Meryl Streep, The Bacon Brothers, and Laura Linney, who pleads "Please, Can I Keep It?"it followed me home. / What exactly it is/ I don't know. Also joining in are Eric Stoltz, Natasha Richardson, Scott Bakula, and two Boyntons, including daughter Caitlin McEwan, who performs a piece that every little listener will relate toa love song to the chocolate chip cookies that are just out of reach. With the collaboration of composer Michael Ford (known to Boynton fans from Rhinoceros Tap), Philadelphia Chickens is that rarest of kids' musical discsone whose inimitable lyrics and music make it as sing-along, dance-along, cluck-along for parents as it is for their children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love love love love this!!!!, Feb 19 2010

I can't say enough good things about this book/cd set. There aren't enough words to explain how much I love this!!!! The music, lyrics, drawings, liner notes... everything is fantastic. It's silly and entertaining for children, but plenty of subtleties to entertain adults (And no, I'm not related to either Boynton or Ford). I also love most of their other work: Rhinocerous Tap and Blue Moo... but I wasn't too fond of Dog Train. I'm just happy I have a pre-schooler so I have an excuse to listen to this. I wish I could give it more than five stars.

WOW! - All of the other reviews are superb! I can't really add anthing more! We happened onto 'Philadelphia Chikens' at a Kohls. I love all of the songs. I try to explain to parents that THIS isn't "Kid Music". It is REAL MUSIC with lyrics "for kids" (and their parents). Daddy hasn't exactly taken a listen yet... but if our daughter has her way (smile) I am sure he'll be won over as well.

BusyBusyBusy... is awesome with headphones!

COWS - anybody ever seen a musical with a chorus line??? OH-MY - what fun! "turn of the head, and a swish of the tail and a tippity-tap of the toes..."

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and clever, Dec 30 2005

I just bought this for my 8 month old son. I am introducing new types of music to him, since he has mostly been listening to classical and lullabyes. This is great. Its clever and funny, and the songs are catchy and fun. My son always stops what he is doing to listen, even though he doesn't understand the words. The book is colourful, and has the songs written in poem form, as well as in musical form. This would make a great gift.
