Gently Cleans Teeth with Sonic Technology

Unlike a manual toothbrush, the Philips Sonicare Essence 5300 uses powerful Sonic technology to clean teeth with up to 31,000 movements per minute. These sweeping motions drive fluids deep into the tight spaces between your teeth and along your gum line, resulting in a cleaner, healthier mouth.

Angled Neck and Contoured Bristles for Comfortable Use

With a unique angled neck and contoured bristles that correspond to the natural shape of your teeth, the Sonicare Essence 5300 delivers a thorough, comfortable brushing experience. The angled neck provides optimum reach for the bristles, which have extra-soft rounded ends that gently massage your gums and go deep between teeth to remove plaque.

Easy-Start and Smartimer Simplify Brushing

The Essence 5300 makes it easy to care for your oral health. You need to apply only light pressure when using this toothbrush--the Essence 5300 will do the brushing for you. For further convenience, the Sonicare Essence 5300 features an Easy-start option that gently increases the toothbrush's power over the first 12 uses, so you can gradually adjust to the Sonic technology.

The Essence 5300 also features a Smartimer to keep you on track. The Smartimer encourages you to brush for a full two minutes, the time recommended by dental professionals. If you wish to pause or stop brushing during the two-minute cycle, just press the power button. If you press the power button again within 30 seconds, the Smartimer will pick up where you left off.

Two Weeks of Power on a Single Charge

After a full 24-hour charge, the Essence 5300 will provide approximately two weeks of typical use (two minutes of brushing, twice a day). A convenient recharge indicator on the brush displays the available battery life and blinks when you need to recharge.

Because the Essence 5300 can last two weeks between charges, you can leave its charger at home for most of your travels. A travel case and hygienic travel cap are included for further on-the-go convenience.

I've been a Sonicare user for years. The first one had a changeable brush similar to this one. They updated to a different attachment and I couldn't find the old brushes to fit the old one, so I updated, too. The second one did not last as long because the "better idea" attachment did not hold up like the old one.
So this one is my third Sonicare toothbrush and they've gone back and redesigned the first one; this is the best one so far. I'm not sure about the recharger design (it's kind of flimsy, doesn't "grasp" the handle very well) but I really like the toothbrush and how it's brushes are attached.

I've used a Sonicare 9500 model for a couple of years and have been quite happy with it. More importantly, my dentist tells me that it's doing a good job reducing plaque and tartar buildup. However, the batteries no longer hold a charge and like so many other products in this disposable world, they are not replaceable. The 9500 has been discontinued, so I bought the 5361 (Philips HX5361/29 Sonicare Rechargeable Essence Sonic Toothbrush with Charger) when it was on sale.

According to Philips own website, this model has the "Quadpacer" feature (a 30-second interval timer) which I find quite useful, esp early in the morning when I'm not quite awake. See goo dot gl slash 3Nbf2
However, as other reviews have noted, it does not. The 5361 is their entry-level version, and the interval timer is not present.

I called Philips Customer Service to enquire, and learned that the HX5700 model is the lowest (least-expensive) model equipped with the interval timer. To their credit, the CSR immediately offered to send me a 5700 handle at no charge.

So full marks to Philips Customer Service for doing the right thing. Boos and hisses to their product engineers for the disposable design. All that's wrong with my old 9500 is a worn-out NiMH cell which should be easy to replace. And brickbats to their web marketing staff who misrepresent the features & functions on the Philips website.

I had previously purchased the more expensive model (HX5752) which stopped charging one month after the two year warranty expired (of course). I replaced it with the HX5361 for about 1/2 the price I previously paid except it does not include an extra brush head and no 30 second interval timer. The interval timer was a nice feature. but can easily live without it. The good news is I still have a couple of extra brush heads from the old model which fit the replacement model ( E series). I can also use other parts from the old model such as the charger itself or the brush handle which holds the batteries. I don't know yet which one is faulty, but either way the parts are interchangeable. This therefore makes it a great purchase being able to use old working parts. As for the effectivenes of this product it was recommended by my dental hygenist and I must say the results have been fantasic. She always comments on how my teeth are much better at cleanings with very little plaque build up. My teeth feel like I just came back from a cleaning as well after a Sonicare brushing. This is a great product, but I only gave it 4 stars because I think the batteries or charger should last longer than 25 months. I challenge Philips to increase the warranty period to 3 years. By the way, Amazon sells this model for $ 25 less than my local Walmart. Go figure.

The brush is way too hard. I've had electric toothbrushes for years but can't use this one. Will have to shop around and see if I can find a softer brush. If not, I've wasted my money.

Philips, nee Sonicare, makes an electric toothbrush that gets your teeth cleaner than anything else I have ever used. When Philips bought out Sonicare they expanded the line to 9 different brush head types. The basic model is all you need. The original, which I use, is called the Elite. It lets you use any toothpaste you want. Some other electric toothbrushes make you forgo toothpaste because it wears out the gears. The Sonicare has a timer that keeps you honest. Though they have now dropped the quadrant timer feature in the entry-level unit. The brushes last six months. The batteries lose their ability to hold a charge after about three years. I am on my fourth entire unit. There is very little to wear out other than the rechargeable batteries. It works at sonic frequencies, much faster than other brands. Going back to a manual brush feels like using a tree branch in comparison. The brush itself can get clogged with toothpaste. Take the head apart and clean it out with some dental floss or a toothpick and it will became re-energised. If it saves you even one cavity it has more than paid for itself, though as toothbrushes go, they are very pricey, including the replacement brushes.

I bought this after zapping my last Sonicare toothbrush in a 220-v plug while traveling. It lasted about 6 years, and would have lasted longer had I not done that! This new one is actually bigger (a surprise), which I guess explains why it is so much cheaper than the slick Sonicare model they sell at Costco. Given the price difference ($169 for 2 at Costco, $49.99 for this one, I'm glad I went for this one. It works great, and it's the electric my dentist recommended to me. Makes my teeth feel super clean and noticeably whiter - oh no, I sound like a commercial! The only drawback is the size - if it's a problem for you, go for the next model up.
