Product Description

From Amazon.com

Going behind the camera and on assignment with veteran photographers for National Geographic, this documentary answers the eternal question asked by the magazine's readers: "How in the world did they get that shot?" The photographers recount the grueling preparation that shooting for the magazine entails, from mundane details such as obtaining visas to preparing oneself for dangers such as severe climates, deep-sea dives, raging beasts, and local bandits. And don't forget insects, lots and lots of insects, a point made pellucid as photographers in a fast montage rattle off how many times they've battled malaria. Besides the physical ordeals, there is also discussion of the emotional toll involved in shooting in brutal conditions, such as one photographer's recounting of how distressing it was to continue shooting pictures in the famine zone of the Horn of Africa. Beyond all the hardships, the travel to the world's farthest flung places involves considerable loneliness, but the photographers interviewed speak of having the "best job in the world," and their enthusiasm for the work is abundant. It goes without saying that this video is a visual delight, as many examples of noteworthy National Geographic photographs, and entertaining explanations of how the shot was set up and snapped, appear throughout. --Robert J. McNamara

Not a "how to" dvd per se, I thought it gave more inspiration for the the budding photographer than anything. If you are into photography and especially photojournalism then I highly recommend this one!

Thrilling and insightful on the life and times of the NG photograther. It will make you appreciate what they do even more. Also motivating for those who are interesting in Editorial, adventure, or photojournalist photography.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bland and felt quickly put together, Jun 29 2009
By
This review is from: Photographers,The (DVD)
I'm a bit disappointed with this purchase. Not that the information it contains isn't good, there just isn't enough of it. Nothing much about the nitty gritty of life as a traveling photographer, but just very broad generalizations and quick snapshot that, honestly, I've read and seen before.

I came out of watching this video feeling I didn't know much more than before about the life of NG photographers, and not much, if anything, I could actually use in real life as a traveling photographer myself, and it answered none of the questions I had before viewing this video. The bonus feature (A passion for Africa) was actually presented in a more interesting fashion than the main title. Even the photographers biography was short to the extreme, giving us less information than the first paragraph of, say, Wikipedia (let alone the full article).

You could argue that they were limited in scope by having the video lasting only one hour, but the answer to that simply is... to make it longer.

It is a shame because it's such an interesting, fascinating even, subject; this video was bland by comparison.

So, would I recommend it's purchase? Not really, especially at full retail price like I did.
