This Visual QuickStart Guide uses a combination of task-based instruction and strong visuals to teach beginning and intermediate users how to create great-looking images with Photoshop. Best-selling authors Elaine Weinmann and Peter Lourekas take readers step by step through all of today's Photoshop essentials: from importing digital photos through basic color manipulation and image correction to painting, masking, using filters, and more. Hot topics like working with Camera Raw, using the improved Photomerge command (that aligns and blends layers automatically) to stitch together images, making selections using the new Quick Selection tool and Refine Edge feature, and Smart Filters are all covered.

Both beginning users, who want a thorough introduction to the topic, and more advanced users, who are looking for a handy reference, will find what they need here. In this edition, using a fresh new design and now illustrated in full color, the authors have streamlined the text by focusing on the most efficient means of accomplishing a task, rather than explaining all possible methods. By the end of the book, users will have a solid foundation for working in Photoshop CS3. Additional intermediate topics can be found in the author's follow-on book: Photoshop CS3: Visual QuickPro Guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide Aug 16 2009
Format:Paperback
The Visual QuickStart Guides series has been very helpful to me with Photoshop, Illustrator and Framework. Guess I'm a visual learner ... and I'm defintely a get-stuck-in-the-software-dip-into-the-book kind of learner. These guides are conducive to that style and I expect they would also be suitable for folks who like to read up before they attempt anything new.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for intro to Photoshop CS3 Sep 5 2007
By G. Blakeney - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have never had a decent intro to PS - the powerful, tool laden software can be intimidating. I am also trying to come to terms with the entire CS3 suite - which can be overwhelming if you have no CS or CS2 background. I stopped by the local bookstore and read this for about an hour. This is the first time I was able to go home and use some skills from memory.

I read through the introduction, interface intro and the first chapter on layers. I was able to follow the author's step by step instructions for each feature coordinated with color screen shots and put most of it to memory.

I am very happy with the book and highly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A lot of info I never seem to use Mar 6 2008
By Ace909 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Conceptually I really like the idea behind these books. You want to find a technique and boom there it is laid out on one or two pages step by step. The problem is it seems I never use them very much. I don't know if the indexing is better in other books or the way it's presented is a little more engaging but I've noticed that after a few years they are always my choice of last resort. Like I said they have a wealth of info packed into them but you should look at how you work and how they're laid out before you buy.
