Photoshop Elements 8 all in one paperback For Dummies,
By
This review is from: Photoshop Elements 8 All-in-One For Dummies (Paperback)
Whether you have no experience in photo editing or at the intermediate level, this book will help you in achieving a polished result to your photograph. Each feature in Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 all in one is so well explained that you don't have to be in front of your computer to learn how to use the features outlined in this book. Each topic featured is so easy to follow that truly even is you are a "DUMMIE" you'll have no difficulty and mastering it. This is truly an all in one with its 636 pages I refer to this book as my bible to digital editing. All the graphis in this book are in color and really help with the explanations of techniques. There are "bulls-eye" icons on the left side of the page when the author suggests an important "tip" to remember on a particular topic. Nothing is missing - infact the book is loaded with so much information - it might seem intimidating at first to follow. Just concentrate on one chapter at a time and you'll do fine. This is definately the best of the best for learning about Photoshop Elements 8 though it can be used on lower versions of Elements some of the tools explained may not be available on earlier programs.

Tough Read,

This review is from: Photoshop Elements 8 All-in-One For Dummies (Paperback)
This is the only book I have read on the subject so don't have much to compare it to. That being said it is a really hard book to read and the layout of books and chapters is very annoying. It is constantly mentioning a new subject an then says "refer to book 2 chapter 3 for more on this". There is a lot of useful information in this book, but not very many examples of how to do things step by step. There are about 7 little projects that it has you do step by step with the book that I found very useful but think there should be more of these.I found myself having to reread pages multiple times to comprehend what they are talking about. It is a pretty difficult subject when you are new to photoshop so I'm not sure how other books compare to this one, however this book will put you to sleep!!! Almost forgot, the most annoying thing about this book is it refers to how to do things on PC and on Mac, so every time you are told to hold the CTRL key on PC it is followed by hold the COMMAND key on MAC, doesn't sound too annoying but I promise you it is after 600 pages of getting instructions on 2 different computers. Would have been much better if they just wrote a separate book for each. I would not buy this book for that reason alone. All of this being said I have not read any other books on the subject so they may all do this but I would look for a book that has more step by step project examples in it. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful

Not Very Good,

This review is from: Photoshop Elements 8 All-in-One For Dummies (Paperback)
The online help is much better than this book. I was really looking forward to using Dummy to learn Photoshop Elements 8 but unfortuanty it doesn't go in depth for a process, just the beginning steps. Example the Slide Show feature, only that you can do it, not step by step how. The online help was much better.

Did the author just read a book on PSE8?,
By L. Davis - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Photoshop Elements 8 All-in-One For Dummies (Paperback)
To echo what others have written, it is not an easy book to read. The author seems to lack any real depth to his knowledge on PSE8. It was if he took it up as a writing assignment. He read the manual, played around with it for a month or two, then wrote the book in another month or two. Sentences, paragraphs and topics jump all around with no good transitions. He tries to make up for it with annoying quips and jokes. He shows little real life expertise on using it. I'm sure the basics are there and with time and patience I can learn from it. But instead I'm ordering another PSE8 book that reads better, and has better reviews, by someone who is seems to be an actual professional.I can't help but wonder at how the 'For Dummies' people have let their brand be tarnished by this second-rate product. Maybe they expanded too fast in too many areas, letting their quality control slip. |
