These recordings date from 1956, when Bernstein was a rising, meteoric talent rather than the great figure in music he eventually became. He was an excellent pianist, but what emerges most from these neat performances of two of Mozart's most fetching concertos is the force of his musical personality. The freedoms he takes (slow movements are rather slow, and some phrasings slightly excessive) seem interesting, where in less charismatic hands they might simply be annoying. The orchestra was made up of the cream of New York's freelancers at the time, and Bernstein leads masterfully from the keyboard. The remastered sound is surprisingly good. --Paul Turok

These are among the most satisfying performances of the two Mozart conertos on CD. Bernstein was a master pianist, and the tragedy is that he did not record more Mozart concertos especially the ones in d and c minor. Another major loss is that he did not record Mozart opera especially the DaPonte-Mozart collaborations--can you imagine a Bernstein Don Giovanni, Cosi or Figaro. Buy this CD and also purchase his performances of the Beethoven 1st piano concerto and the Mozart 25th piano concerto. As time passes the sum of Bernstein's achievemnts looms ever larger over the second half of the 20th century.

While I love Leonard Bernstein as a conductor, I have to admit that my first (and only prior) experience with him as a pianist left a lot to be desired. I purchased the "Bernstein Century" recording of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," a performance that did not do much for me. Even though my criticisms had mostly to do with the tempo of the piece, it left such a bad taste in my mouth that I had serious doubts when it came to Lenny playing piano. But then I came across this title, and because of Amazon's editorial review and its selection as an "essential recording," I decided to get over myself and purchase this CD. Well, I couldn't have asked for a better performance of Mozart's 15th and 17th Piano Concertos than the ones L.B. has provided here. It's hard to believe that this is the first time this material has been released on CD, because it is one of his truly great recordings. I now recommend Bernstein both as a conductor and performer without reservation.
