Piano Sonatas Nos. 1-3

A lot of people like Pollini's recording of Boulez's Second Sonata. I think it's very good. But it was Idil Biret's recording that made me fall in love with the piece. Biret shapes the lines more vividly, and her dyanmic range is astounding. Such things really do count while playing such a piece! Pollini is rather monochrome in comparison. In fact, I dare say Biret's performance of the Second Sonata is the sort of thing one might use to convince people of the intensity and beauty of Boulez's music.

I'm not entirely sure about the other Sonatas though. Biret does a good job with the first movement of the First Sonata (with a wonderful sense of disturbed stillness), but the final movement is not as fiery as I've heard in a now unavailable Erato recording (I think the pianist was Pierre-Laurent Aimard). And, to be honest with you, as a composition I don't care much for the Third Sonata. But this is a relatively cheap CD, and the priceless interpretation of the Second Sonata makes it a real bargain

N'attendez pas de ce grand monsieur qu'est Pierre Boulez une promenade vautrée sur un sofa de mousse à l'ombre de quelque arbre feuillu d'été dans un jardin à la française bien ordonné. Vous n'y êtes pas. Il s'agit bien de faire sonner le piano et non de faire résonner des accords plus ou moins éternels que l'on nous rassène depuis plusieurs siècles, avec des harmonies, des harmoniques et des arrangements conventionnels et conventionnés, bref de la « grande musique » au mètre. Ici chaque note fait sonner le piano toute seule et elle jette dans nos oreilles des harmoniques aussi clairement détachées que possible et qu'amplifient encore des intervalles inattendus. Il ne s'agit plus d'accords majeurs ou mineurs, il s'agit de sauts sonores sur un escalier en plein déploiement dans l'espace suivant une ligne directrice aussi changeante que pas droite. On a ainsi l'impression d'avancer par soubresauts d'une marche vers l'autre sans toujours savoir si l'escalier monte vraiment ou bien descend. Et puis trois notes qui se veulent toniques se terminent comme un coup de fouet redoublé d'une autre série pas toniques du tout mais au contraire bancales et mal portantes, ou du moins qui nous donnent cette impression d'être assis sur un vaste vide qui ne nous soutient que parce que c'est écrit dans nos têtes que nous ne devons pas tomber, et pourtant les notes tombent les unes après les autres à la cascade tempe-s-tueuse et amazonienne de quelque nature musicale équatoriale, vaste forêt vierge épineuse de quelque zone sèche tropicale où se glissent parfois un serpent vert, un rat gris, une mangouste vorace, quelques papillons argentés, et peut-être que vous entendrez les pas pesants de l'éléphant de service dans les octaves les plus graves du clavier. N'ayez pas peur, écartez les branches, avancez et grimpez aux rochers, le ciel ne peut apparaître que quand vous atteindrez l'esplanade en forme de terrasse qui domine la vallée comme un rebord fragile tout en haut de l'à-pic. Cette musique essaie de recréer dans nos oreilles les impressions qu'un Christophe Colomb découvreur de terres vierges pouvait avoir en tête quand il descendait de son bateau et foulait des terres inconnues pleines de bruits et de surprises inattendues. Nous n'avons plus de terres vierges sur notre planète, si ce n'est celles qui rouillent calmement au fond de nos esprits, de nos âmes et de nos cerveaux, et c'est là que Boulez nous entraînent : retrouvons le sens de l'imprévu dans un monde qui ne laisse plus de place au sauvage. Au moins dans nos dendrites on peut cultiver l'insolite sans avoir peur qu'un mercanteux de service vienne y faire pousser ses patates OGM à chair tricolore. Nous sommes là au-delà de toutes les surfaces et apparences, au plus profond de la moelle humaine qui ne croit qu'à l'impossible comme horizon perpétuel. Qu'il est bon d'être condamné à la peine musicale capitale : une musique qui ne compte pas trois intervalles d'affilée qu'un autre compositeur ait pu utiliser, même avec des notes différentes. On sent le plaisir exquis du couperet nous tomber sur la nuque asservie par la vie quotidienne et nous la relever d'un cran pour apprendre à regarder les étoiles.

This is a hard call;Pollini's monochrome timbre(in the Second Sonata)intentionally creates the rhythmic (furious) untrampled drive the work needs which is exciting,you don't need a listening agenda to consume this violence.Pollini would rather have some purest conception at work(as here in his early Eighties reading) sacrificing all, than drifting aimlessly over the generous violence the Second imparts.The Second Sonata, for the most part moves at such a fever pitch that many times you are not appraising the gradations of timbres(as Biret strives for),but simply the motions and movements of registers which occur in rapid-fire quicksilver formations over the entire keyboard. That's why Biret's First Sonata reading is far superior than anyone I've heard,save Fredric Rzewski,Biret knows how to construct drama and the First still had remainders and leftovers of that for the young Boulez was trying to get,subvert tradition out of his creativity.The First Sonata still has its registral movements in fairly obvious successions,and Biret shapes those outlines admirably. Her Second(I agree) lacked demonic spirit which you find in Pollini.Boulez(at the time of the Second) was reading Antonin Artaud and the Theatre of Cruelty mixed with the surreal poetry of post-war occupied France,somewhat disturbing ambiences for a man in his Twenties.It's incredible that the young Boulez had only a clangorous upright piano to try out his revolutionary new work, this one.

The Third Sonata is rather opaque and ill-focused, and I've never heard anyone yet who plays it with any degree of conviction,Aimard,Rosen.And Biret here as well strives for summoning a mystery out of this indeterminate mapping of the beautiful multi-coloured score.

As a footnote: I still admire Yvonne Loriod playing the Second,she brings an enraged demeanor to the entire work short changing the mystery that may be the result in the rather surreal second and third movements.I heard Rzewski play the Second at Carnegie Hall and in Chicago in the early Seventies,and he stays fairly close to the inflammatory enragement of Loriod.
