Grade 3-5–Although many books have been written about Picasso, both as man and as artist, few have been as accessible to this audience as Jacobson's title. Written in simple, clear language, it effortlessly leads readers through the life of the artist, exploring his influences, selected works, and his creative processes. The softly radiant oil paintings are mostly full page and enhance the enjoyment of the book. They closely follow the accompanying text with one exception: an illustration of Picasso working by candlelight faces a discussion of the influence of Cézanne and African carvings on his early work. Reproductions of Picasso's artwork are also scattered throughout the volume, but given the distinct contrast in style between them and the other illustrations, young readers are not likely to confuse the two. A timeline fleshes out some of the facts imparted in the text. This eloquent tribute will serve as an introduction to Picasso and to an artist's inspirations.–Heather E. Gr. 4-7. Created by a husband-and-wife team, this slim biography features striking oil portraits of its famous subject. On each spread, a brief paragraph sums up a period in Picasso's life. Small inset reproductions of a Picasso artwork appear, along with a page-size painting of Picasso that shows the artist at work, at rest, and in a few dynamic images, staring back at the viewer. The succinct text probably won't support reports, and there are no notes. Still, the appended annotated chronology will certainly help students looking for a quick reference, and with its unusual portraits and basic introduction to cubism and Picasso's life, this will be an intriguing addition to the surprisingly slender offerings about the artist for this age group. For a more comprehensive resource, students can turn to Stephano Loria's Picasso (2001) in the Masters of Art series. Gillian Engberg

Not Great on Picasso's Art But OK Story About the Man,

Reason for Reading: I enjoy picture book biographies. Personally, I do not enjoy Picasso's artwork myself but he was a very intriguing personality and his life is certainly an interesting one to read about and I wondered just what a children's biography would focus on mostly.This is a brief tale of Picasso's life which details his childhood and early years of artwork that brought him up to his influences which finally brought about his first piece of cubism, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. Then it goes on to explain what he was trying to capture in this strange new art form, talks about his famous piece on the Spanish Civil War, Guernica, and ends with this passion and obsession of painting. The very end of the book presents a timeline of his life. Honestly, I found the story a tad boring, very fast paced, not giving enough info on Picasso's life but spending more time describing his artwork. Aside from the reproduction of Guernica, the other few examples of Picasso's art could be called more like thumbprints in the top corners of pages and there were certainly not enough examples of his faces, which he is so well known for when one hears the name Picasso, to give a good representation of his art. On the other hand, the book's artists Jacobson and Fernandez have done a brilliant job creating a beautiful picture book that calls back the time period of Picasso's hey days. Not the best book for actually seeing Picasso's art but an OK story about the man.
