Kate and Henry pilot a plane, landing on a runway of crisp bacon strips next to a field of giant broccoli stalks and oversized hamburgers. Passing through an orange-juice rain, they approach the town of Chewandswallow, which "used to be a very ordinary town, except that instead of weather, food rained down from the sky for breakfast, lunch, and dinner." Times have changed in Chewandswallow, and readers will love finding out how storms of gigantic food threatened normal life until eventually the Falling Food Company was created, sending food to hungry people around the world. Ron Barrett's comical, detailed ink-and-watercolor illustrations and the lively story make this a satisfying sequel to a delicious classic. Pickles to Pittsburgh is an excellent bedtime book--just keep a snack handy! (Ages 4 to 8) --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
PreS-Gr 3-When we last visited the town of Chewandswallow in Judi Barrett's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Macmillan 1978), the food raining down from the skies had grown enormous and dangerous, so the townsfolk were forced to evacuate. In this sequel (Atheneum, 1997), a visit from grandpa, known for his tales of Chewandswallow, inspires Kate to dream of visiting the town with her brother. It has been resettled and the giant food is now being shipped all over the world, for free, to feed hungry folks. Ron Barrett's watercolor and detailed ink illustrations are scanned iconographically as this first person tall tale is read expressively by a female narrator. Sound effects abound as well as occasional light music. Different voices are used for the various characters. Both video and audio quality are excellent. It is not necessary to have read the first book to enjoy this video, since it includes a brief synopsis of the original story. While this is not as compelling as the first book, it is a fun flight of fancy that children will enjoy.-Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA

Not as good as the first, but worth owning,
By A Customer
This review is from: Pickles To Pittsburgh (Paperback)
I remember reading the first book ("Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs") when I was in school and I loved it. I had no idea there was a sequal to it until it showed up on my recommendations list. I purchased it for my daughter. It is a good story, but for me at least, it was just a sequal to a much better story. I am glad I purchased both books, but my daughter and I really enjoy the first much more.

I thought PICKLES TO PITTSBURGH was the sequel to CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, but I was somewhat mistaken. The children from the first story do visit Chewandswallow, but only in a dream. The illustrations in this book are just as original as the ones in the first. However, the story is lacking and doesn't have the charm of the original story. Young children don't seem to mind that, though, and like reading the stories back to back. If you're familiar with CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, you maybe disappointed somewhat after reading PICKLES TO PITTSBURGH. However, if you're just looking for a book to read to kids, it's a good choice.

This book is most interesting for 4-8 year olds but it will continue to be read forever. It is about a girl's dream. She dreams about a different world. Everything is made out of food. Kids ennjoy the imagination in this wonderful book.
