Product Description

From the Back Cover

Word by Word Picture Dictionary , Second Edition, by Steven J. Molinsky and Bill Bliss, is the only truly communicative vocabulary development program!  This is the new edition of the picture dictionary program famous worldwide for its ease-of-use, lively spirit, and active conversational approach.

Outstanding features of the new edition:

  • The Chinese/English Edition and other Bilingual Editions present the second language in blue next to each English word.
  • Vibrant illustrations and simple accessible lesson pages are designed for clarity and ease-of-use with learners at all levels. Word by Word is the most learner-friendly picture dictionary — especially for Beginners.
  • More than 4,000 words in an expanded range of topics prepare students for success using English in everyday life, in the community, in school, and at work.
  • A careful research-based sequence of lessons integrates students’ development of grammar and vocabulary skills through topics that begin with the immediate world of the student and progress to the world at large.
  • New lesson formats provide integrated context-based instruction with nouns and high-frequency verbs. Objects and actions that go together are learned together!
  • Expanded discussion questions encourage students to share their backgrounds, experiences, opinions, and creativity as they relate vocabulary and themes to their own lives.
  • A new Teacher’s Guide and Lesson Planner with CD-ROM in a colorful user-friendly format includes lesson planning suggestions, community tasks, weblinks for expanding vocabulary themes through the Internet, and reproducible masters to save teachers hours of lesson preparation time.
  • A unique choice of workbooks at Beginning and Intermediate levels offers flexible options to meet students’ needs:
    • Vocabulary Workbooks feature motivating vocabulary, grammar, and listening practice.
    • Standards-based Lifeskills Workbooks provide competency-based activities and reading tied to national, state, and local curriculum frameworks.
    • A Literacy Workbook is also available.
  • The outstanding audio program includes all words and conversations for interactive practice, and — as bonus material — an expanded program of WordSongs for entertaining musical practice with the vocabulary.

By the authors of SIDE BY SIDE this is a much more colorful and better organized picture dictionary than the formerly more popular OXFORD PICTURE DICTIONARY. Whenever I bring it to class, if the students don't have it, the first thing atleast 70% will ask me is "Where can I get it ?" - - used with the accompanying flash cards (not included) you can teach entire (and substantive) lessons with just those two things alone... and even without it, you can use it to expand amply from whatever text book you're using. The chapters on the household, occupations, places around town, work activities are especially useful. In my begining classes we learn how to ask each other questions about these subjects, and begin all our classes discussing what we did over the weekend, what we did at work etc. etc. We talk about our house, our family... and all these topics are with Level 1 students, eye to eye (pair work, group work, class discussion)and facilitated by lessons from this book. - - Pictures get students talking and open them up and this is the ultimate resource ! ! !
As a tip, the students love looking at the pictures and discussing them, so to keep activities interactive, have students share books... or make worksheets where the students have to exchange information ! ! !

One of my specialties is vocabulary, so I'm always looking good visual dictionaries. I've bought half I've found, and most of the rest are on my shopping list. This is a very close second to the Oxford Picture Dictionary as my favorite. It's not as comprehensive and the illustrations are not as good, but the topical arrangement is better and it's easier on your budget. The authors have written several other excellent ESL books. Two of their vocabular books include a basic version of this one and Day By Day: English For Employment Communication. Their Foundations is a conversation book but is also a good vocabulary builder.

I love everything about the book: the pictures, dialogues, list of vocabulary. I bought the book because I love " side by Side". If there is anything to improve, please indicate whether it is traditional Chinese version or simplified Chinese. I placed an order, but received an traditional Chinese version. It's not that I am against this variation of Chinese itself, but I know many people can only read the simplified Chinese version( especially children).
If it is still not available, it's the time to create one! If it is already around, please indicate it in the product instruction. Thank you!

If I could have only one ESL reference tool in my classroom, it would be the Word by Word Picture Dictionary. This book is an invaluable resource in all ESL/EFL settings--from beginning to advanced, from pre-school through adult, in the U.S. and abroad.
We have placed a copy of this book in every classroom. I also encourage all incoming students to make this one of their first purchases. Indeed, Word by Word Picture Dictionary has quickly become the core of our curriculum.
