Arnold Schoenberg claimed he had never set out to be a revolutionary. Yet the song cycle he wrote in 1912 based on proto- expressionist poems and featuring a grotesque harlequin figure, Pierrot Lunaire, still reverberates with its haunting, startling originality. This work introduced the world to a hitherto unthought-of musical landscape; to call it innovative would be an absurd understatement. What's particularly exciting about the undertaking here (Boulez's third recorded take on this music) is how utterly fresh the music sounds, its novelty unblunted and yet strangely beautiful--a far cry from the forbidding Schoenberg of stereotype. Soprano Christine Schäfer negotiates the no-man's land between spoken word and sung pitch--the technique known as Sprechstimme which Schoenberg introduced here--with fascinating nuance. She brings a cabaret-savvy sensibility to bear, along with a gripping sense of pathos, alternately sweet and acrid. Boulez treats the songs as miniatures, offering coloristic and multiperspectival--almost Cubistic--portrayals of Pierrot. For all the score's nebulous atmospherics, Boulez distills a keen, sharp clarity of line and timbre. Also included is the extraordinary song "Herzgewächse" (scored for harmonium, celesta, and harp), in which Schäfer matches her voice like a "crystal sigh" to the instrumentation. The album is filled out with Schoenberg's setting, during his exile from the Nazi horror, of Byron's bitterly ironic "Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte" for a baritone reciter. --Thomas May

5.0 out of 5 stars THE pierrot for the ages May 3 2004

Format:Audio CD
FINALLY,
a succesful recording of pierrot!
we should have known it was going to be boulez and his forces that finally delivered it.
oh, he attempted to many moons ago with an all star line up (which included bareneboim) on the sony label.
but, alas, it suprisingly fell flat. way flat.
now, with schafer (the darling voice of contemporary music)
and the ensemble intercontempolain, boulez has delvered a sardonic, emotional (yes, emotional!), revolutionary performance, in other words, exactly what it supposed to be!
how revoultionary?
well, so revolutionary that we STILL get people (read some of the negative reviews-too unconventional from bangcock, etc)that people are shocked by it even today.
get this, along with boulez's new recording of moses un aron before it goes away.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't disagree more!! Oct 20 2003

This is something of a rebuttal to the one-star review submitted by an "Amazon.com Customer" where he/she states that Schoenberg embraced atonal/serial music due to his lack of genuine musical/compositional talent and to gain historical relevance. All I can say is, WHAT???????? Has this person ever heard the gorgeous "Gurrelieder" or "Transfigured Night?" Not to mention, ever encountered the sublime beauty that is "Pelleas and Melisande?" These three pieces are the epidome of late German romanticism, not unlike the works of Strauss and Mahler. I wholly accept that fact that some people find much of Schoenberg (or any Second Viennese School composer, for that matter) later works difficult to digest, but to dismiss his brilliance in such a glib fashion, was too much for me to ignore. To be frank, I haven't heard this recording but, nevertheless, I love these pieces and don't think that either they or the genius behind them, should be so easily and readily dismissed.

That guy just has it in for Schoenberg! Well, there's no accounting for taste.

What more is to be said about this CD? It contains one of my favorite readings of Pierrot Lunaire - a spectacular monument of 20th Century music. The piece is played with all the ironic cabaret influences we'd hope to hear in this piece. The ensemble is truly together, and the sprechstimme is quite convincing - not overdone or misunderstood.
