5.0 out of 5 stars A good little read, Oct 21 2008

I quite enjoyed this novel. Mo Hayder is one of the better writers out there who can write a suspense/horror type novel. She manages to build the right amount of suspense and build a plot that keeps readers turning page after page after page. She did this with The Devil of Nanking, and she did with Pig Island too.

The plot of the book focuses on an investigative reporter who is investigating a cult. And from there, Hayder builds her novel. I don't want to share too much about the story, for fear of ruining the plot. But I will say this. The novel is well written. The characters well researched. The plot believable. And finally, it is a good page turner.

If novels of suspense are what you're in to, give this one a read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, Mar 15 2008

After reading the glowing description on the cover of the book, I bought it. Apparently it was a "Crime Writer's Association Dagger" Award finalist. Unfortunately, it didn't take me long to decide I liked none of the characters and found the plot irritating. I persisted because I do not give up easily on a book, but I finally quit on this one. I no longer cared what happened. I'd really like to read a review by someone who liked the book so I could figure out what it is I missed.

1.0 out of 5 stars an adolescent thriller, Dec 8 2007

With an apparent fixation on genitalia and the famous four letter word this writer's style is limited to say the least. The charactization is thin and the plot pretty well transparent by the time the reader is past the first chapter. While the concept of bringing a disabled person more to the fore of our public sensibilities is laudable, this writer's approach smacks more of exploitation than respect. Other than acknowledging that she has an ear for dialogue I cannot find more to say about this work.
