Brilliant Duo Performance !,

This review is from: Piggyback (Audio CD)
Coming off the full band rock n blues of 'Something In Between', Matt took a left turn and chose to release something more stripped down and intimate.Teaming with Sarnia's harmonica virtuoso Mike Stevens (Google him to see his impressive resume), the pair sat down and wrote a diverse bunch of tunes. Songs like 'Devil's Bride' and 'I Wanna Be a Float Plane' are rocking uptempo numbers that feature some fine soloing by Mike. 'Hold Me With Both Hands' and 'Going Home' are beautiful ballads. The transition from Matt's soaring vocal to Mike's beautiful single note harmonica line in 'Hold Me' is one of those goose bumpy moments every time I hear it. Strong singing and playing from both guys and an intimate setting make this a winner for me. It's obviously different from 'Something In Between' as it's a duo, but certainly a strong release from Matt. A bunch of the songs have found their way into regular rotation in his live set, so if you are reading this, you've likely heard them already and can decide. Finally, if you are a fan of the harmonica, be prepared to hear an absolute master of the instrument do things that you may not have heard done before !!

Disappointed,

This album is not in the same league as Matt's first two releases. Perhaps he felt pressured to release something because people may have been clammering for new material but better to wait until you've got something good to offer. The songwriting is very dull and uninteresting and even Matt's guitar-playing seems sloppy, like the tape was rolling during an informal kitchen table jam session. For me the most annoying factor was Mike's excessively frantic harp-playing. There is no doubt he has talent but, in case he hasn't gotten the message, less really is more. There was way too much harmonica and not enough creativity, polish and variation. Matt, you are amazingly talented but don't get complacent. Aim higher.
