In July 2005, after a twenty-four-year absence, the full line-up of Pink Floyd re-united to play Live 8 - and stole the show from superstars like Paul McCartney. In 2006, reclusive founder-member Syd Barrett died. These two events provide the closure necessary to tell at last the full story of one of the world's biggest bands.

From Dark Side of the Moon to the gargantuan project of The Wall, Pink Floyd sold millions of albums and put on some of the most spectacular live shows ever staged. Now Mark Blake has talked to the band's friends, road crew, former housemates, university colleagues - some of whom have never spoken about the band before - musical contemporaries like Pete Townshend and Alice Cooper, and all the band members themselves, to produce the de? nitive history of this most English of bands, from school days in Cambridge, through the mid-sixties psychedelia of the UFO club, to the bitter schism between Roger Waters and his fellow members that led to a seemingly irrevocable split.

Aurum's book on the Clash, Passion is a Fashion, was described as 'a truly great account' of 'a great band': Mark Blake's book will do the same for Pink Floyd.

About the Author

Mark Blake is editor-in-chief of MOJO and Q magazines' special issues, and edited the issues on both Pink Floyd and progressive rock. This is his first book.

Of the three biographies on Pink Floyd I have read (also 'Sacuer Full of Secrets' and 'Inside Out'), this is by far the best. Blake really does a nice job of describing the details and gives a feel of what it was like to be there at the time. Not a detail went unnoticed in his research. He lets the reader feel almost as though you were a member of the entourage that hung around with the band. The book flows along at a very comfortable pace. It is also the only up to date biography available. About a third of the book covers the Syd Barrett era up till the second album, and rightfully so. Also, if you don't have their whole library, try the new box set 'Oh By the Way' at the same time as reading this. A terrific experience.
