Despite the recent wave of Pilates (that's Pi-lah-teez) enthusiasts singing its praises to magazines like Vogue and Elle, the system has been around since World War I; George Balanchine and Martha Graham used the exercises to add strength without bulking up, perfect their posture, prevent injury, increase flexibility, and improve circulation. Indeed, a person who's completed a Pilates workout has a rather orgasmic glow; the workout is aerobic but not so much as to cause much sweating. This is not to say it's easy; while your behind gets a great lift, the exercises focus on the abs, or "powerhouse." Each exercise is clearly explained next to step-by-step photographs of Winsor's fabulous bod. Unlike in most exercise guides, you won't see Winsor promising remarkable results in minimum time--she says an hour a day is what you need to give to reap the Pilates benefits, but adds, "In the other twenty-three hours you will not only enjoy yourself more, but will find that you have more quality time."
Winsor even goes so far in her praise of the method to mention that she hasn't had a full-blown asthma attack since she started faithfully following the program. She adds, "it has helped me recover from devastating injuries, it has transformed my self-image and sense of worth, and it keeps me calm and centered every day." Better to get the DVD and see how this is done,

This book contains black-and-white photographs to demonstrate how to use the Pilates system pf exercise at home, Pilates really only requires a met, and a few props such as a stick and one of those exercise balls. The exercises rely on the "powerhouse" or the abdominal muscles, truly the center of one's balance and required for every activity from holding one's back upright to walking. However, the small movements using the legs and arms that are typical of Pilates (which takes less than an hour a day and is reputed to produce dancer-style elongated muscules) are best demonstrated by a video or DVD. So if you are serious about doing Pilates and don't have a studio to attend, combine this book with a DVD to get better instruction. On its own, this is probably not sufficient for a beginner, though the experienced would enjoy reading it.

I bought the Pilates videos and I've enjoyed them. This book is a useful tool for understanding the method behind the moves. It is written clearly, explaining parts of the movements most people would not think to consider when starting any exercise program. I was glad to see her point out that these moves should be done to the comfort level of the individual, stressing the importance of injury prevention. Included is a complete part on stretches/ exercises for dealing with soreness in different areas of the body.However, it helps to have some knowledge of kinesthetics or dance, as Pilates is about mental awareness of the body.

I thought this book was great. My daughter had given me Mari's videos as a Christmas present. I was doing the videos and it was going pretty well, but when I purchased the book and gained the insight of the Pilates method, it all became more clear and addicting. I would reccommend her book and videos to anyone!
