Product Description

Telling stories of ordinary lives with extraordinary skill, Pamela Mordecai draws delicately detailed portraits of life in Jamaica and other islands, with occasional trips to Canada. Her characters speak with the cadences of the Caribbean, and cope with the universal experiences of birth and death, joy and betrayal. In "Hartstone High," a group of girls learn the high price of education; in "Alvin's Ilk," a self-centred teenaged boy comes to see his elderly neighbour in a whole new way; and in "Shining Waters," a young priest's plans for his new parish go horribly awry.

About the Author

Pamela Mordecai was born in Jamaica and wrote her first poem at the age of nine. She has published over thirty books, including textbooks, anthologies of Caribbean writing, children's books, four collections of poetry, and has co-authored a reference work on Jamaica. She has a special interest in the writing of Caribbean women. She lives in Toronto with her husband, Martin.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Icing on the Cake!, July 13 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Pink Icing (Paperback)
This anthology of short fiction is a treat from start to finish! Mordecai recreates Jamaica so vividly you experience the stories "like a movie in the mind." But these stories are more than just visual experiences. They are visceral, too, and resonate long after the book is finished. Each story is clearly a labour of love, for a time and a place that have shaped the writer and for the characters who show her view of that world. Mordecai captures the sound of the language brilliantly, so that you hear its Caribbean lilt, and her poetic flair enhances the narrative. Reading this book is like taking a trip to Jamaica, but not as a tourist. It invites you in to see the real place, as if by a friend who knows the culture intimately, and wants you to truly share it in-- not just encounter the glossy pictures and stereotypes of the travel brochures. These are characters who arrive "in living colour", and stay to visit. Like the title story, this collection delivers "the icing on the cake". I hope to see more stories by Pamela Mordecai!
