Review

“Pirates Latitudes has the loot: Gore, sex, action…. A lusty, rollicking 17th century adventure…. History as entertainment…. Crichton has done his homework.” (Bob Minzesheimer, USA Today )

“Unabashed fun.” (Cameron Martin, New York Times )

“Offers unexpected turns and plenty of yo ho ho’s.” (Richard Eisenberg, People (3 out of 4 stars) )

“It’s not an ironic pirate novel. It’s not a pirate novel with a secret gimmick. It’s simply an entertaining tale filled with crafty privateers, despicable villains, treasure hoards, double crosses and a sea monster. Go figure.” (Michael Berry, San Francisco Chronicle )

“The plot sucks you in like the giant kraken monster that nearly sinks our hero’s galleon.” (Benjamin Svetsky, Entertainment Weekly )

Book Description

The Caribbean, 1665. A remote colony of the English Crown, the island of Jamaica holds out against the vast supremacy of the Spanish empire. Port Royal, its capital, is a cutthroat town of taverns, grog shops, and bawdy houses. In this steamy climate there's a living to be made, a living that can end swiftly by disease—or by dagger. For Captain Charles Hunter, gold in Spanish hands is gold for the taking, and the law of the land rests with those ruthless enough to make it.

Pirate Latitudes is Michael Crichton at his best: a rollicking adventure tale pulsing with relentless action, crackling atmosphere, and heart-pounding suspense.

2.0 out of 5 stars A MAP WITHOUT A TREASURE, Dec 22 2009

(HALL OF FAME)    (TOP 10 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Pirate Latitudes (Hardcover)
This book is NOT what I will remember the late Michael Crichton by. He was an excellent writer, excelling in popularized science techno-thrillers but also fully capable of producing period dramas of high quality, such as The Great Train Robbery. Having read that gem recently, I can attest that PIRATE LATITUDES was either NOT written by Michael Crichton or was only a rough script - and was then polished and hastily packaged as a novel.

True, Michael Crichton's main focus had always been the story, often at the expense of his characters. However, the characters here are so crudely and halfheartedly developed that I could not find myself caring for any of them, including Cpt. Hunter, the main hero. The story does go from one cliffhanger to the next (in a James Rollins fashion) and it will keep you turning pages. Nevertheless, it is writing-an-action-novel-by-the-numbers: the story never managed to get a hold on me.

Where is Crichton's signature obsessive research that used to turn long-held misconceptions on their head? Where is his attention to obscure details and little-known scientific facts with big impact? Where is his ability to entertain and educate at the same time?
After the sad cases of Frank Herbert and Robert Ludlum, Crichton's heirs are attempting to exploit his fans as well. He did not deserve this.

Let this act of piracy hang from the yardarm.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's All About Potential..., Aug 7 2010
This review is from: Pirate Latitudes (Paperback)
Even though many reviewers on here are complaining that they were mislead by the publisher, and that this is certainly not a novel worth reading, I would disagree. The key to enjoying this novel is to sit back and enjoy the ride. Full of adventures and mishaps, this novel's appeal comes from wanting to know what happens next, and despite its other faults (lack of character development, for example) it is the potential that must be focused on. While the manuscript was found "completed on his computer" it does not, by any stretch, mean that the novel was ready for publication. The cut offs and gaps people mention are undoubtedly areas that were going to be expanded on later. Should the author still be alive, chances are the novel would still be sitting in his computer while he worked with it to turn it into literary perfection. But right now, with what we have, it is painstakingly obvious that this novel was a gem waiting to happen. Any Crichton fan should be grateful for the opportunity to read something in an unfinished form; it is a wonderful, once in a lifetime, opportunity to see and author's process, since we are not normally privy to a novel until after its completion. In both its simplicity and energy, this novel is well worth reading and one should not be so eager to dismiss it in the future.

1.0 out of 5 stars So Sad, Jan 14 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Pirate Latitudes (Hardcover)
Having enjoyed Michael Crichton's work for many years I looked forward to his latest release. I bought the fact that the completed manuscript had been found in his files after his death. Unfortunately this file was either in the garbage can or his high school memorabilia, as this book is so poorly written it is a shame. I would not recommend this book to anyone over the age of 15, although I would strongly recommend all his other works.
