5.0 out of 5 stars We can all learn from this one., Feb 21 2012
This review is from: Places in the Heart (DVD)
A wonderful movie which shows how stong people can be when the need arises. One of the best parts is the scene where Mr. Will follows his rope to attempt to help Moze while he is being beaten by the clan members. Too bad his aim wasn't better and he could have popped off a couple of them.....although, we know the results would have been disastrous for both he and Moze. The gang mentality is so shallow.....

4.0 out of 5 stars Still a very good film, but lost something for me over the years, Jan 28 2012

was sad to find I didn't love this as much as I had remembered from
its release nearly 30 years ago.

The acting is terrific, and the film looks great. But the main plot has
elements of familiar melodramatic clichés that bugged me more now in a
way they didn't in 1984. The race to save the farm, and the 'we'll do
it despite the odds!' dialogue felt a little too Hollywood this time
around, as did the 'perfect' gallery of downtrodden, oppressed
outsiders (the single mother, the African-American, the blind man).

At the same time, the subplot of the romantic triangle between Ed
Harris, Lindsay Crouse and Amy Madigan, while wonderfully acted, really
seemed to have very little at all to do with the rest of the film.

That said, all the acting (Sally Field, Danny Glover, John Malcovich)
is terrific, and the details of time and place are rich and vivid is
slightly (intentionally) softened by the haze of the passing years
(Benton grew up in the town where the story takes place).

And that wonderful long last shot, which gives the whole film a larger
context, is still a powerful and brave way to end a story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Drama!, May 27 2007

I enjoyed this movie for it's good (although predictable) storyline and excellent cast. It basically demonstrates how life was hard back then and the willpower that people needed in order to reach their own personal goal.

The only part I disliked is that it should have been a little longer to show more what happens to each characters or maybe a sequel, because it leaves you with a little gap to fill and a few questions at the end. In other words, it needs some kind of closure.

If you like special features, forget it, this movie doesn't have any. Normally I don't really go for it, but this movie would have need it because of the abrupt ending.

But all in all, it was good and entertaining as a movie should be.
