Plain Jane: Brunettes Beware
A Patterson-style thriller with a dash of Hannibal...

A city paralyzed by a serial killer stalking the night, taking a most gruesome trophy.
The only standing in the murderer's way is an FBI profiler...recently released from a mental institution.

Just remember to keep the lights on when reading this one!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the thriller it was hyped to be May 26 2013
By Lise
Format:Kindle Edition
I purchased the book because of John Rollins' evaluation. I should say that I was somewhat disappointed. I certainly cannot compare it to Patterson whose plots are tightly weaved. The writing here is amateurish and the character development not very deep. Both the profiler and his ex lover detective are unbelievable and their relationship is not credible.

The storyline is interesting but no way near frought with terror. The allusion made to this novel being Hannibal like really falls short of the mark. No where do we find that level of tension, terror and gruesomeness.

There is however an interesting twist to the end ; the murderer is not predictable but the circumstances surrounding the why and the how (it's hard not to provide a spoiler) is not quite believable .

I did read the whole book in one sitting so it' s not a book to be totally discounted. The story is not as compelling as it could have been but it does incite the reader to find the killer .

5.0 out of 5 stars Set Aside a Chunk of Time... June 5 2010
By Mimi - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This one had me flipping pages until 2 in the morning. I knew when I saw the quote from James Rollins (one of my favorites) that I would get at least my money's worth out of the book, but I had NO idea what laid in store for me.

I pride myself on being able to figure out books with a twist. I could tell from the beginning that this novel had one. The killer is shrouded in mystery. Aha! A challenge.

Two things happened as I read. First, I was so engaged I forgot to try to figure out who did it. Second, when the reveal came, I was STUNNED! It made so much sense, but I never saw it coming. I tracked it back, (just like right after I watched "The Sixth Sense") and every "t" was crossed, every "i" dotted.

I don't often write reviews, but I felt compelled with this one. I can't recommend it highly enough. Get it now; thank me later! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Blew My Mind July 18 2010
By Michael F. Webb - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
My pal Cristyn West (otherwise known as @craftycmc on the Twitter) asked me if I would review her novel "Plain Jane", a thriller which she accurately calls a James Patterson-ish police procedural. I don't typically read a lot of those sort of books-they are fine, but they have a sameness to them that tends to have them lose their flavor, in my mind. Plus my bedside table has a stack of library books on it, so even though Cristyn gave me the <a href=[...] I warned her it might take a while for me to get to it.

So I decided I'd take a peek last night, see how the story begins. And the next thing I knew, I was gasping to the finish line this afternoon, unable to stop. West cooks up a serial killer story with a unique twist that I will not spoil here. It is a definitely adult story, but well done, with characters that aren't like any others I have encountered. All in all, an extremely well constructed, pulse pounding read that is positively worth your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's a Fine Line Between Madness and Genius June 26 2010
By Brighter Scribe at The Scribe's Desk - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Right out of the gate this book creeped me out. Being a brunette myself, the title alone was enough to scare me! This was a seriously good book.
Words like unhinged, grotesque, shocking, intriguing, and macabre were spinning through my head as I read the stunning and suspenseful pages. In this book, the lines between profiler and killer severely blur constantly. Cristyn West keeps you guessing, "Just WHO is the killer?" And just when you think you've figured it out, she takes you through to another labyrinthine twist.
I found myself wondering, "Just who is watching you?" This was a creepy, gritty, horrifying and shocking ride. Right until the last page I found myself exclaiming, "No way!" This book will make you jumpy, especially if you're a brunette. You'll find yourself checking your doors and windows, and looking over your shoulder. You'll catch yourself watching everyone around you, wondering......
The suspense is drawn out to the last drop, right up until you discover the shocking truth! To catch a killer, just how far would you go? Read Plain Jane: Brunettes Beware and you will discover that there's a fine line between madness and genius!

1.0 out of 5 stars Literally a bodice buster Sept. 21 2012
By VeniceLion - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
So, maybe this baby boomer male isn't the audience for this book, which is more romance novel (looking like it might become a series) than a murder adventure. Lingering gazes, frustrated loves, dusky lovers, and as the title of this review states, literally a bodice buster - twice! if one is into that sort of thing. I AM NOT

To have Amazon, or whomever compared it to James Patterson is a travesty of the highest sort verging on mis-representation, and Patterson should sue.

An interesting set-up is bungled by inept composition and the aforementioned romance novel staples. This novel is an insult to 21st century women. Yes, I know all genders can be sexually obsessed (the heroine here is) but to make a contemporary heroine the puppet of a male and even though this male is ambiguously a manipulative genius, though not the villain, verges on the criminal. Ms. McCray needs to concentrate more on plot, and work out her obsessions in another forum. Cut 50 pages of this bodice busting c**p and give us more substance.

1.0 out of 5 stars no hope - Two lead characers are utterly unlikable Sept. 5 2012
By SAM - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I did not like this book. In fact, I hated this book, I was disturbed and disgusted by this book. This is an independent author for a reason - because this book is not fit for printing it is so entirely inappropriate. (I am not weak of stomach or faint of heart - I do watch shows like Criminal Minds and other like shows so gruesome and disturbing within certain limits is not an issue.)

To start I did not find it to be a thriller at all. Furthermore, I did not find the two main characters, Nicole and Kent to be likeable or sympathetic leading characters. I found Kent to be mentally unbalanced, (which he was written as), and as such really I do not understand how Nicole could have any romantic interest in him. Nicole's character is like one of those weak friends who is always complaining about her terrible cruel boyfriend but then continues to be with him. At the end of the novel, her weak annoying character become even more dis-likeable by taking an action that makes her even more mentally unstable than Kent.

I do not know how there are so many high rating for this book, it was a terrible read and I unfortunately paid $5.99 for it, not the current $0.99 selling price. I have never given a one star rating, if I could though, I would give it 0 stars; it was that bad.

This book is not comparable to Patterson, Child or any other author who actually has a major publishing house backing them.

The brain identifies three main factors when determining a threat. Distance. Movement. Familiarity. Lets take the tattooed gentleman from earlier. He was at the border of your zone, which should have made him less a threat, but he was moving and you had no familiarity with him, giving him a bullet up the charts. In addition, and this is what kicks you in the ass when you first start stalking chicks, the brain knows you got an incomplete look, which sets off an alarm in your head to fill in the picture. "e;
