When they emerged in 1979 with their dayglo colours and two-foot high beehive hairdos, the B-52s looked like a mondo trash B-movie and they had music to match. This compilation includes a generous helping of tracks from their classic eponymous debut; from the funky rhythmic rush of "Planet Claire" to the effervescent surf garage and piercing girl vocals of "Rock Lobster" and "6060-842". Tracks from later albums such as 1982's Mesopotamia
, however, show them hitting a creative dip. "Loveland" and "Nip It In The Bud", for instance, are low-key and less vibrant than their early material. Not surprising, considering that their guitarist Ricky Wilson was to die of an AIDS-related illness in 1985. A mixed bag, but still a blast. --Lucy O'Brien
