5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible and comprehensive, Dec 4 2008

Bought this as a textbook for one of my introductory planning courses and found it surprisingly easy to read. The first part of the book is a general review of the historical development of town planning in Europe and America. The next couple of sections deal with the present status of town planning, and cover a very broad range of issues that planners deal with, from urban design principles to community participation. Though the ideas are fairly universal, the examples the authors use are more often Canadian than not. There are plenty of interesting and revealing diagrams and illustrations, as well as boxes with news stories as anecdotal examples. The writing avoids being overly academic, and the content is well organized.

I have minor quibbles with the sometimes cluttered layout and the fact that the pages are entirely greyscale (though that probably does keep its cost down slightly). In terms of content, however, the book serves as an excellent introduction to contemporary urban planning issues and practice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Planning Canadian communities, Aug 29 2011
This review is from: Planning Canadian Communities (Paperback)
This book is easy to read and provides great examples of planning history, current trends and future considerations. I use the book as my main source in teaching an introductory course in planning and a site planning course. I have the previous issues as well and each new addition is just as informative as the next.
