Product Description

Amazon.com

When an indie-rock band as intimately and fiercely loved as Death Cab for Cutie makes the inevitable major label jump, it often telegraphs a painful death. Witness Husker Du, the Replacements, Nirvana--hell, even R.E.M. After a successful four-album run on tiny Seattle imprint Barsuk, however, Death Cab for Cutie just might buck the trend on its Atlantic premiere. Yes, you can grumble about the production (a little too slick), the proportion of ballads (a little too many) and the overall feeling of restraint (a little too much), but ultimately the album delivers everything the group does best in emotional, experimental songs such as "What Sarah Said" and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," which both blend stark lyrical details with acoustic guitars and soft-focus electronics. In "Soul Meets Body," meanwhile, songwriter Ben Gibbard has come up with the kind of blissful, beatific pop song that's capable of disarming even the harshest skeptic. "A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere," he sings. --Aidin Vaziri

5.0 out of 5 stars This band is amazing., Oct 15 2005

While everyone salivated over Death Cab for Cutie, I never 'got' it. I always assumed them to be an overrated emo-pop band with nothing new to offer (based on the name-dropping on The O.C), but reaching my musical maturity, I realize how wrong I really was. There is no other band like them. They are a unique, powerful, foreful entity and vouching for that is not only that vastly successful and brilliant "Transatlantacism", but their newest release, "Plans" which is basically crack for your ears. Upon the first listen, I was not as impressed as I assumed I would be. But when the album ended, I played it again. And again. And again. Over and over and over, because that's the kind of album it is; something so incredibly haunting and amazing, that it deserves (and needs) repeated listenings to take in the powerful lyrics and emotional delivery of Ben Gibbard's amazing vocal skills. Among the best tracks on this album are the opening act, the strangely uplifting "Marching Band of Manhattan" and the haunting and beautiful "I Will Follow You into the Dark", which leaves you with mixed emotions. Is death a happy and comforting end when shared with true love? Or is it a frightening unknown for which there is no return? These questions are left to the listener's interpretation, but one thing that is guaranteed; this album will not ever disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars lyrical masterpiece, July 8 2007
This review is from: Plans (Audio CD)
i won't lie to you - i don't thoroughly love ALL the songs on this album....but the ones that i do, well, let's talk about those. not only is the musicianship amazing. the songwriting is so captivating, but the lyrics just take you to exactly where ben gibbard wants you to go. i have never heard such beautifully written lyrics and i hope i never do. i'm amazed that such a talent doesn't receive more praise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not exactly a rock album, May 22 2007

When this album first came out, the "Soul Meets Body" single was a huge hit on the airwaves. Later, "Crooked Teeth" could be often heard playing on certain stations. I bought this album believing that Death Cab for Cutie's style of music revolved around those songs. So when I first listened to the album, I was a *little* disappointed; expecially when the last tracks came around (which are slower in tempo). Some of the songs have a more relaxing feel to them then the singles do. Having said that, I have grown to love every song on this album, once I knew what to expect. My advice: just give it a few listens, but in the end you'll probably love dcfc.
