Product Description

Product Description

Rarely is a compilation record as satisfying as Platinum Christmas is, but it's not due so much to the N'Sync's' rather whiny take on "I Don't Want to Spend One More Christmas Without You," the showy vocal gymnastics of Christina Aguilera on "Silent Night," or even Carlos Santana's enigmatic noodling on "Posada (Pilgrimage to Bethlehem)" as it is to some of the "lesser" lights on the disc who turn in the most memorable performances. For instance, Christian rockers Jars of Clay whip up a stunningly rhythmic version of "Little Drummer Boy" that borders on reggae, spiked with an ingenious bass line and a sinewy, liquid guitar that elevate the song above mere holiday cover material. Also, former Faithless vocalist Dido's strong and bracing acceptance of lost love on the gothic, delightfully chilling "Christmas Day" and Joe's urbane and single-minded "This Christmas" distinguish this collection from the usual holiday combo plate. But that's not to say that Britney Spears's breathy "My Only Wish (This Year)" isn't irresistible (conjuring up visions of Phil Spector dancing in our heads), or that TLC's wickedly self-indulgent "Sleigh Ride" doesn't shine like drugstore tinsel. And it's the effortless and graceful musings of Dave Matthews on the spiritually uplifting "Christmas Song" and Toni Braxton's sparse and elegant rendering of Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song" that really help to make the season bright. --Jaan Uhelszki

Since opinions are all over the chart on this CD, I thought I might as well throw in my 2-cents worth in yet another direction. Bite the bullet and by the CD for Santana's "Posadas (Pilgrimage to Bethlehem)." This instrumental cut raised a vision of Joseph and Mary making the slow journey to Bethlehem and the Magi on camels making the journey, too. ...
Since I'm more of jazz and new age fan than a pop fan, I am not well versed on many of the other artists. But I will give an impression on a first listen. I agree that Britney does OK. (What little I listened to her previously, there have been a lot of digital effects that in my opinion detracted rather than added to her signing. However, her backup band was good.) I liked the Dave Matthews cut. (But then I like Dave Matthews.) On my first listen to Christina Aguilera I hated it, but on repeated listening I swung around. In contrast, Whitney Houston, as usual, is instantly loveable. Most of the other cuts are decent, too.
Once again, buy the CD for the Santana cut. (I could not find the cut elsewhere.)

I bought this CD last year, because of the talent involved, (Whitney Houston, TLC, Toni Braxton, Monica, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Dido, Carlos Santana, and more) I enjoyed certain songs, but the number of songs I don't like , are why I only gave the CD 3 stars. My favorite songs on here: Britney Spears "My Only Wish This Year" is very old school 60s -70s pop and I give it 2 thumbs up. Monica "Grown-Up Christmas List" this song is a perfect example of why she is one of the best r&b singers of my generation, with this David Foster production. I love Dido's "Christmas Day" she has a very beautiful voice. *N-SynC's "I Don't Wanna Spend One More Christmas Without You" is a beautiful slow song, showcasing JC Chasez's and Justin Timberlake's beautiful voices. I also have a soft spot in my heart for the soulful renditions of Sleigh Ride by TLC (R.I.P. Left Eye) for us TLC fans, this song reminds us of Lisa's playful personality on her holiday rap, Toni Braxton's "The Christmas Song" is one of, if not the best recorded version of this holiday classic EVER, Whitney Houston's "Who Would Imagine A King" from her film "The Preacher's Wife" closes out the CD beautifully with a song from in my opinion the greatest diva ever. So all in all, I recommend this CD for your Christmas celebrations. Happy Holidays and happy listening!

It's a good cd, but there are barely any "classics" to make this a holiday cd. I would take all the "non-classics" and make them singles so they can become "hits". As for the cd, it's really good, all of the songs are fantastic. But, it needs some songs like "Christmas Song" "Winter Wonderland" "Let It Snow" "Deck The Halls" and stuff like that. The artist choices are good, but the songs choice are kind of bland.
