4.0 out of 5 stars Classically Chesterton, typically enlightening, May 5 1999

This review is from: Platitudes Undone: A Facsimile Edition of Holbrook Jackson's "Platitudes in the Making" with Original Handwritten Responses by G.K. Chest (Hardcover)
This small book of platitudes written by Mr. Jackson is a fine example of the thought of the English gentlemen at the turn of the century. The comments written by Chesterton in response to these platitudes are further an excellent example of wit and clarity of thought that marks Chesterton's works. For one who wishes to quickly aquaint himself with Chesterton, this small volume is an excellent look at the man who cut through the verbiage of modern thought to get at the heart of truth. It is amusing and enlightening all at once.

This review is from: Platitudes Undone: A Facsimile Edition of Holbrook Jackson's "Platitudes in the Making" with Original Handwritten Responses by G.K. Chest (Hardcover)
One of the greatest writers of all time, Gilbert Keith Chesterton, has inspired and enlightened not only high-minded philosophers but also common men. In this particular work, one sees the brilliance of Chesterton, but at a different angle. The manner in which he analyzes (and often deconstructs) Holbrook Jackson's misguided world-view is a most classic display of wit and wisdom. The reader is found either laughing as Chesterton pokes fun at Jackson's ideas or is left nodding in affirmation as Chesterton adroitly undermines even the most "solid" arguments. A true work of genius, this "book within a book" is worth taking a look at... who knows? One might actually learn something!
