Beyond Hold 'Em,
By
This review is from: Play Poker Like The Pros: The greatest poker player in the world today reveals his million-dollar-winning strategies to the most popular tournament, home and online games (Paperback)
Previous reviewers have noted that Phil Hellmuth's book "Play Poker Like the Pros" has a very short section on Hold 'Em, and therefore have given the book a low rating. On the contrary, I believe that this book's strong suit is that it does cover more than one type of poker. This book, titled "Play Poker Like the Pros" not "Play Hold 'Em Like the Pros", covers the games of Limit/ No Limit/ Pot Limit Hold 'Em, Omaha-Hi, Omaha Hi-Lo Split, 7-Card Stud, Stud-8, Stud Hi-Low Split (Razz), and some online play.Although this is not an intermediate/advanced book, this book will give the beginner players out there a taste of the most popular variants of poker out there. Surprise surprise, Hold 'Em isn't the only form of poker that people play. With all that being said, onto the meat and the potatoes. This book really doesn't have much. Although it will give beginners a feel, rules and basic strategy in the games the book covers, there's really not much in here that will truly help improve people's games. In the Hold 'Em section, Phil preaches his top 12 hands to play in Limit, and the No-Limit 15 hands. Although this is a good starting point, there's more to this. Phil Hellmuth, although most of the poker world knows him as a total jerk, is a very good poker player, with years of play beneath his belt. And yet he's holding so much back? It's quite pitiful. The same recipe is used when writing the Omaha and Stud sections. Here are the best starting hands - if you get them, raise. Otherwise, fold. In short, this book is a perfect book for a beginner that has watched Hold 'Em on TV, and wants to expand outwards from there into different forms of poker. Once you get a feel for which game you like the best, then specialize from there. If you've been there, done that, the skip this book and move forward.

Without doubt the worst literature of poker I have ever read. it started very bad but I had to read to the end and it was an incredible waste of my time. I gave it a 2 star instead of a 1 star because it will tell true beginners to just be patient and play the top 10 hands, and that is even weak advice. It mentions NOTHING on strategies of limit or NL play, position play, chase odds, outs nothing!Save your money and time.

Phil is of course one of the worlds best players, however his book is weak. The section on Holdem is only a fraction of the book. Absolute garbage. Harrington on Hold em is all you need!
