This is a terrific book with an engaging autobiographical text as well as Milt's stunning photos of jazz greats captured in informal moments - a must for lovers of the classic jazz of the thirties, forties and fifties.

Milt Hinton's beautiful book "Playing the Changes" is filled with anecdotes and photos (which he took) covering sixty years of his life as a jazz musician. The photos alone are worth the price of this expensive volume. However, the chronologically arranged anecdotes allow the reader to gain insight not only into the life of a professional musician, but they add to our understanding of the evolution of jazz during six decades of the twentieth century.
