Book Description

July 22 2008
Rick Dockery was the third-string quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. In the AFC Championship game against Denver, to the surprise and dismay of virtually everyone, Rick actually got into the game. With a 17-point lead and just minutes to go, Rick provided what was arguably the worst single performance in the history of the NFL. Overnight, he became a national laughingstock and, of course, was immediately cut by the Browns and shunned by all other teams.

But all Rick knows is football, and he insists that his agent, Arnie, find a team that needs him. Against enormous odds Arnie finally locates just such a team and informs Rick that, miraculously, he can in fact now be a starting quarterback–for the mighty Panthers of Parma, Italy.

Yes, Italians do play American football, to one degree or another, and the Parma Panthers desperately want a former NFL player–any former NFL player–at their helm. So Rick reluctantly agrees to play for the Panthers–at least until a better offer comes along–and heads off to Italy. He knows nothing about Parma, has never been to Europe, and doesn’t speak or understand a word of Italian. To say that Italy holds a few surprises for Rick Dockery would be something of an understatement.

Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Christopher Evan Welch kicks and scores with his engaging narration of Grisham's charming tale of touchdowns and tortellini. Rick Dockery, a 28-year-old third-string NFL quarterback, is playing for the Cleveland Browns. In the final minutes of a decisive game, Rick is brought off the bench to disastrous results. The Browns lose the game and a chance at going to the Super Bowl. After he is unceremoniously dumped by the team, the quarterback agrees to play for a small but tenacious team called the Parma Panthers—whose playing field is in Parma, Italy. Welch perfectly captures the tone for this humorous and often touching fish-out-of-water story. Welch brings the listener along with Rick, as the young quarterback painfully adjusts to the strange new world he's thrust into. He brings to life Rick's discovery of Italy, with all its history and colorful characters. Especially delicious are the descriptions of the rich Italian foods that Rick and his teammates seem to constantly consume. By the end of the book, listeners will be seeking out the nearest Italian trattoria.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something different! Sep 25 2007
Format:Hardcover
I really enjoyed this book it is not the typical Grisham thriller Which really do not interest me any more. This the story of Pro quarterback Rick Dockery who has become the laughing stock of the NFL. The team his agent can find him is an Italian team that plays in a European league. This is a fish out of water story, Rick Has never been to Europe and knows nothing about Italy and all he knows about Italians is from watching American gangster movies. This of course makes from some cute and funny situations. While not a thriller the book does have some surprising twists. Good entertaining, feel good read! For aother fish out of water story I highly recommend "Across the High Lonesome!" it will have you laughing and crying!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight read but still entertaining Feb 15 2013
Format:Hardcover
If you are looking for a light reading book to enjoy in your spare time then I would recommend Playing for Pizza for you. The book caught my attention because I love sports and anything to do with football, however, I quickly realised that there was more than football in Grisham’s story. The quintessentially American main character Rick Dockery undergoes a dramatic lifestyle change when his dismal career path takes him to a low level NFL style league based in Italy, a country which Rick knows little about. During Rick’s struggle to adjust to his new way of life I found myself engrossed in the descriptions of the Italian characters as well as their energy, way of life, and many fine varieties of dining rather than the details of how his newfound team performs.

The book has a few moments of thought provoking events but overall it avoids commentary on any social issues. This is to the advantage of the reader. Rather than delving into any contentious issues as race or language, Grisham focused his energies on juxtaposing the big dreams of the NFL with the simple passions of unpaid players. This allows a detailed but readable account of a big fish in a little and completely different pond. Easily worth the 16$ on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A departure for Grisham Dec 13 2007
Format:Hardcover
In order to pursue his pro career, third-string quaterback Rick Dockery (recently fired by the Cleveland Browns) chooses to play with the Parma Panthers of the Italian Football League. In fact he has very little other choice as he is more or less ban from pro football in North America. Italy will be an eye-opener for him.

This is a feel-good novel ' something of a departure for Grisham. A sort of romantic comedy about american football Italy. An odd mix to say the least, and, surprisingly, one that works. It is light- and warmhearted, laced with sun, good food, and great sceneries. There is a romantic naiveté in almost each Grisham's main characters, and Dockery doesn't break that simple rule. As I said, this is an odd mix and it does make for an odd book, in the sense that I am not sure if readers of romance will love the football part of it and if football fans will love the romance part.

I liked it tremendously (loving both football and Grisham). The story is fairly predictable and contains no real surprise whatsoever. There is a love interest, a bunch of warm and sympathetic characters, and one villain who will almost be won over by the end. Recommended light reading.
