Book Description

Jon Loomis's new collection of poems visits big subjects by way of the commonplace. While The Pleasure Principle is full of surprises, both narrative and metaphoric, it is more than anything a humane and thoughtful exploration of the human condition: passion, mortality, cross-dressing, time, tourism, art, the shifty nature of reality, and, always considered in Loomis's work, the unknowable absolute.

About the Author

Jon Loomis is also the author of Vanitas Motel, winner of the first annual FIELD Poetry Prize, also available from Oberlin College Press.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasure Indeed!, May 9 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Pleasure Principle (Paperback)
Now that we have a Laureate with a sense of humor, maybe we can begin to sharpen our appreciation for the poets among us who know how to laugh - at themselves, at the rest of us, at the whole blazing sideshow of what our world has come to. Jon Loomis, in this book and his previous (Vanitas Motel) is one of the best: a sharp eye and ear, an ability to tell hilarious and painful stories, an unerring integrity that is all too rare in po-biz these days. If you, like me, have fallen asleep over the likes of Jorie Graham and Robert Pinksy, you'll welcome the verve, wit, and penetrating insights of Loomis' wonderful new book.
