It took two or three listenings of both CDs before Liszt's piano music captured me completely. Hitting the piano keys cold with my ears -- without any orchestral arrangements in the background was not enticing. However, I soon discovered that some of the compositions did have orchestral backgrounds which made listening more enjoyable and then I discovered that the compositions without orchestral arrangements were exquisite by themselves -- as solo piano pieces, but not at first, like I said.
My personal favorites are all six variations of the "Totentanz" along with "Douze Grands Etudes, No. 2" and "Die Zelle in Nonnenwerth" a deliciously quiet and thoughtful piece.
Titles are very important, I discovered, in Liszt's music. Titles are key in helping to understand the purpose or goal of the composition.
All the compositions on this album are very listenable either as background music or as serious pieces worthy of dedicated attention.
