Product Description

From Amazon.com

Wilhelm Kempff was the premier German pianist of the postwar period, so it's no surprise that he was considered one of the supreme interpreters of Beethoven. He recorded complete sets of the sonatas and concertos twice, and just about all the rest of the chamber music with piano as well. Kempff was a classicist by nature, and his approach to Beethoven was clear and poised rather than impulsive, but it was never lacking in sheer power or virtuosity when necessary. His last cycle of Beethoven sonatas is rightly regarded as his musical testament. Even if the mono recordings offered a few more exciting moments in a couple of works, you can't go wrong here--there isn't a dud in the lot. --David Hurwitz

5.0 out of 5 stars essential, Jun 1 2004
By jon "jon" (toronto, canada) - See all my reviews
what else can you say about kempff that isn't said before? this is the best beethoven ever record, he has a magic touch and this sets clearly shows it off. i have both recordings of his beethoven sonatas (1951 & 1964) as well as his schumann, brahms, schubert, bach, mozart, liszt etc and would recomand them all... enjoy the piano master

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, Aug 3 2003
By Alan Beggerow (Rock Falls, IL USA) - See all my reviews

The 32 piano sonatas of Beethoven are as a world unto themselves. The variety of the music contained in them underlines the craftsmanship and genius of their composer. They continue to be a challenge for any serious pianist. Wilhelm Kempff was always up to that challenge.

He was more than a virtuoso pianist. He was a virtuoso musician. His was the style that showed the grand plan, the great line of the music he was playing. To be sure, the details were there, but never at the expense of the entirety. His was an art full of subtlety, tone color and expression. One never hears banging or heaven storming in his playing unless the music demands it. And even then, it's his own particular phrasing and nuance that come to the fore.

There are many sets of the sonatas. Beethoven's music is so great that it can stand many different interpretations. But this set is a masterpiece. If you only could have one set of the sonatas, this is the one I would recommend. Even though the sound quality is not exactly state-of-the art, the musicianship more than makes up for it. Cannot be too highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, Feb 19 2003
By S. Hawkins "jimmy_cello" (New York, NY) - See all my reviews

This set came highly recommended to me by a friend, and for very good reason...it's unbelievable.

Kempff is clearly a thinking man's musician. The Beethoven presented on this album is a far cry from what seems to have been released of late (such as Richard Goode). Rather than sheer technical brilliance, Kempff relies on bringing out every nuance of the pieces. Nothing sounds forced - the music simply flows out on these CDs...an incredible feat considering the difficulty of sonatas such as the Hammerklavier.

For this price, you cannot do better. Ashkenazy's recordings are equally wonderful, but I don't believe they are available in any sort of complete set. So until then, this remains the one to get.

This set is okay, but Kempff was past his prime and the sound is brittle. The 50s mono set is better all around.
