A Little Gem,
By A Customer
This review is from: A Pocket Guide to Ontario Wines, Wineries, Vineyards, & Vines (Paperback)
Great things come in small packages! I got this nifty little book as a Christmas stocking stuffer, and it's one of my favourite gifts! The Ontario wine industry has finally come of age with this publication, and we wine drinkers can be thankful to have a guide to what's on our doorstep that can hold its own with the world's best. It's up there with Hugh Johnson's annual guides, and the tasting notes are better-written. I love getting Konrad's straight-shooting wine advice on CBC Radio, but to be able to have his encyclopaedic expertise in your back pocket on visits to the LCBO or drives through wine country is priceless. Apart from good introductory information on grape varieties and so on, there are interesting essays on various topics interspersed through the alphabetical winery and winegrowers listings. But the main event is the 2,000-odd wines reviewed here, practically everything that's available, and the addresses, phone numbers, websites, etc, of the people who make them. He's ruthlessly honest in his opinions -- no corporate LCBO or wine-world puffery here, he must be making plenty of enemies as well as friends with his no-bull appraisals -- but that's what you want from a trusty advisor: an expert, opinionated, lively (often laugh-out-loud funny), and frank assessment of the highs, lows, and everything in betweens of Ontario wine. Bravo!

Fun to read and a great reference book too,

This book is packed with reviews of thousands of wines. I found it very useful when shopping (both at the LCBO and in a winery shop) and it's also handy if you're taking a trip to wine country. It's a good bathroom book too. The tasting notes are great fun to read and brutally honest, and I loved the mini-histories of all the wineries and vineyards. I'm sure I'll use this guide for a long time, and I'm buying extra copies as host gifts and Christmas presents. (It would make a great stocking stuffer.)

It's not up to date (2011) but gives an excellent review of the uniqueness of the owners and their wineries in Ontario.. Some sad to say are no longer in business.. Hopefully the author will update with a new version.. In the interim, I'll get my reviews from Natalie McLean (.com) and Vintages (.com)..
