4.0 out of 5 stars Guid wee book, Oct 21 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Pocket Scots Dictionary (Paperback)
While the title tells us this is a 'pocket' dictionary, this book is neither small in size (being a typical paperback 5.5"x8" in size) nor scant in coverage (it comes in at 360 pages). Unless you're very much into the Scots language I can't imagine needing a more comprehensive dictionary. I bought it because I need a definition of the odd word that Kelman or Welsh throws out in his fiction and to look up the many unfamiliar Scots words in the poetry of Burns. And in browsing through it I have come across a number of words that I remember my auld Scottish granny using when I was much younger, which has been nice. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it only works one way: you can look up Scots words and see what they mean in English but you can't find out how to say an English word in Scots. But if you need a concise Scots dictionary at an unbeatable price, this is the one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pocket Scots Dictionary, Mar 12 2011

After five trips to Scotland, I decided I wanted to understand some of the Scots language I was hearing on the streets in Glasgow. Scots is a form of English and varies from location to location. It is not Gaelic although it was partially influenced by Gaelic. I found this dictionary to contain most of the words I wanted to look up along with another Scots/English dictionary, but Glaswegian is a complex slang which is spoken fast and may contain words used within families and neighborhoods. A better book would involve a dictionary of the Glasgow Patter and there are several being published.
