STILL A GREAT ALBUM...NOT A FAN OF THE REMASTER, April 12 2011
This review is from: Point Of Know Return (Rm) (Audio CD)
"Point of Know Return" remains (for me) the definitive Kansas album: a collection of strong songs tied up with excellent production. What peeves me about this release is the remaster of "The Portrait"; and if one needs a side-by-side comparison of why remastering is nothing more than an industry ploy that ruins good music, just play the original mix and remastered versions. In the original version, all the instruments stand on their own, cleanly, and the dynamics of each one shines through. In the remastered version, it's become one big loud mess. All the space that existed between the instruments is lost, leaving a version that's nothing more than headache inducing.

The Peak of their Career., Mar 24 2009
This review is from: Point Of Know Return (Rm) (Audio CD)
Kansas was just off their mega smash "Carry On Wayward Son" and multi-platinum selling "Leftoverture" disc - and now had to follow it up with something big. "Point of Know Return" delivers the goods, start to finish. A word of warning - Kansas's sound is quite dated today and does take some getting used to. But digging down into their songs can be worthwhile. The band was big on Native American mythology and poetry, and their songwriting reflects this. The big multi-format hit "Dust In The Wind" is significant proof of this; so is the excellent "Sparks of the Tempest". The songs can be preachy, but songs like "Closet Chronicles" and "Helplessly Human" are thought-provoking and well-delivered. The title track was a minor hit but is the closest thing to "jubilant" as Kansas's music gets! And the gradually addicting "Portrait" is a thinly veiled tribute to Einstein. All in all, "Point of Know Return" will never be confused with a Led Zeppelin classic, but it is a solid part of classic rock history and should be considered for any significant collection of seventies rock.

"Dust in the Wind" is the best track. A lot of other very creative productions on this one. Classic rockers...this is a timeless one.
