Book Description

Dec 12 2012
Polar Shift: it is the name for a phenomenon that may have occurred many times in the past. At its weakest, it disorients birds and animals and damages electrical equipment. At its worst, it causes massive eruptions, earthquakes and climatic changes. At its very worst, it would mean the obliteration of all living matter. Sixty years ago, an eccentric Hungarian genius discovered how to artificially trigger such a shift, but then his work disappeared, or so it was thought. Now, the charismatic leader of an anti-globalization group plans to use it to give the world's industrialized nations a small jolt, before reversing the shift back again. The only problem is, it can't be reversed. Once it starts, there is nothing anyone can do. Austin, Zavala and the rest of the NUMA Special Assignments Team have certainly faced dire situations before, but never have they encountered anything like this. This time even they may be too late.

From Booklist

This is Cussler's and Kemprecos' sixth novel starring Kurt Austin and his NUMA Files National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA) Files Special Assignments Team. This one concerns a polar shift, a phenomenon that can trigger huge eruptions, earthquakes, and climate changes. Sixty years ago, a Hungarian scientist discovered how to artificially set off such a shift, and now an antiglobalization group plans to strike the world's industrialized countries. The water in the world's oceans and lakes will be jerked in a different direction, pounding the coastline, causing massive floods. All electrical devices will fail, and there will be hurricanes and tornadoes of unheard-of force. Radiation sickness from solar rays penetrating the earth's magnetic field will kill millions. The earth's crust will break open, causing volcanic eruptions and lava flows. But fear not; Austin and his cohorts are coming to the rescue. The plot is inconceivable, but Cussler's loyal fans won't care. George Cohen

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read Jan. 23 2014

Format:Mass Market Paperback
I enjoyed every chapter of this book. The author had no problems getting the point or objective across to the reader. And he did it wonderfully in this fast-paced technothriller. Clive Cluster accomplishes one of the greatest anti-globalization messages I have ever read with this book. My other recommendations would have to include Collapse, Union Moujik, Guns Gens and Steel. You'll also probably enjoy them too if you enjoyed Polar Shift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kirk is giving the old man a run for his money! Aug. 30 2005
Format:Hardcover
Some say Cussler writes for men, but I disagree. What red blooded American woman would not want to spend the night with Dirk Pitt? He is the original man's man. I have to admit, I have not been as enthusiastic about the Kirk Austin series, but it started to grow on me and I think "Polar Shift" maybe as good as the best of the Pitt Series. I won't rehash the plot except to say the plot has to do with some bad guys figuring out a way to switch the magnetic poles causing real havoc for the planet (I guess this has really happened naturally in the past, which I did not know). Of course Kirk and his NUMA crew are the only ones who can stop the evil madman. I got caught up in real suspense here, there are some unexpected twists, and this time out success is not guaranteed-at least I did not think so. Most of you who read Cussler know what thrilling, adventure to expect, and you won't be disappointed here.
