I spent well over $600 on textbooks for university last year, and this was the only one which I bothered to do all of the readings for. The two authors are wonderful at getting their opinions across, showing a deep level of clever insight, while still stressing the fact that all cultural theory is a relative and opinionated matter (to open the reader up to developing their own critiques and opinions). The work dissects the topic of popular culture from every possible angle, and gives strong justification to each of its arguments. Unlike many cultural studies which I have read in the past, this one goes beyond the subjective cynicism which plague many theorist's writings, and simply gives a strong account of the historical and present significance of our cultural practices today, and allows the reader to expand and reflect upon those insights. A brilliant work, and most of all, an enjoyable read.
