Book Description

Dec 1 2008 9780837602356 978-0837602356 2nd

Since 1977 Karl Ludvigsen's Porsche: Excellence Was Expected has been regarded as the definitive work on Porsche history. In this masterwork Ludvigsen presents the inner workings, masterpieces and failures of an independent automaker that has exerted a disproportionately powerful influence on the automotive industry. Remarkable both for its breadth of coverage and its technical depth, Excellence Was Expected covers every Porsche road and racing car from the company's beginnings through the development of the 2009 Panamera.

In this first revision since 2003, Ludvigsen has updated the three-volume set through 2008, including five augmented chapters, five completely new chapters, and 230 new images. The five new chapters feature full-color artwork throughout and cover the RS Spyder, the Cayman, the Type 997, the 997-based GT racers and the Panamera. He also looks closely at Wendelin Wiedeking's financially savvy stewardship of the Porsche company through the first decade of the twenty-first century.

With this new edition, Excellence Was Expected remains "the definitive archetypal marque history," (Autocar) that it was in its first edition. And Karl Ludvigsen continues to set the bar high for automotive historians, just as the company he chronicles continues to shape our very definition of the term "sports car."

New for the 2008 edition

  • 257 new or revised pages and 230 new photos
  • Five new full color chapters covering the RS Spyder, the Cayman, the Type 997 production and GT cars, and the Panamera
  • Updated coverage of the Boxster, the Type 996, the Cayenne and the Carrera GT
  • Updated Competition Victories appendix

4.0 out of 5 stars COMPREHENSIVE Was Expected 2008 ed. Dec 7 2008
Format:Hardcover
This will be a long review as a product of this stature deserves. Not mentioned in the Amazon's product page description, this IS the 2008 edition.

First off, this massive 3 volume set came in a very heavy / huge box (bar fridge size)and filled with air pillows. The volumes themselves are double boxed in bubble wrap and styrofoam endpieces. So Amazon / Bentley publishers sure package it thoroughly. I'm sure it weighed 15 Kg !

The volumes have attractive slip covers / sturdy hardcovers / quality paper and usefull attached bookmarks. Volumes fit nicely in a heavy-duty slip case which also has an attached 'cord' to assist in pulling the volumes out.

I've only read the 1st volume / scanned thru the other volumes so far. What I've found is that the sheer scope / detail is magnificent if not a bit overwhelming, for which I'd recommend reading in small steps. Having read several Porsche books by authors McCarthy / Clausager and Clymer etc, I must say this set tops them all. It even tops Seiff's Portrait of a Legend.

Make no mistake, this is no glamourous picture book by Schlegelmilch or Lucinda Lewis.Virtually the whole set is composed of medium quality B+W photos and good quality technical drawings. It is only at the last 1/3 of volume 3(new updated section) that color pictures appear. Each volume has an attractive, small section of side profile color drawings of the models.

The real strength of this massive set is the text. The sheer depth of analyis is astonishing. It was if it was written by Ferry and Butzi themselves ! Though not an expert on every company detail, I've read many many automotive histories and a good dozen on Porsche and I've never read anything approaching the scope of this set.

From compehensive Table of Contents / Indexes of the WHOLE set included in EACH volume, to bibliography andcomplete race records appendixes, nothing is left out. This set will appeal to a hard core Porsche enthusiast (like myself) or someone who REALLY enjoys reading about german cars or sports cars in general, it's not for a casual reader or casual Porsche admirer because of it's size / weight / cost.

Yes it is very expensive (my most expensive books yet, and I have dozens) but compared with the quality of information and unusual photos (many not seen anywhere else),construction quality and number of pages (aprox 1700), the set is reasonably priced.

I am puzzled why there was no photo/mention of the two 1948 356 prototypes built in Zurich by Hans Waibel. I had recently seen one of them in the Imperial Palace collection (Las Vegas - Aug 08). I would have liked to seen more color photos and better reproduced B+W's. Some of these same B+W's were better reproduced in my other cheaper books.

On a negative note, some of the pages in one volume were creased in one corner and two volumes had their cloth endpieces separate from their spines. I don't mind a minor glue job / some creases but this is a reoccurring problem I've found with books printed in China (no slight to Amazon). Bentley Publishing needs to monitor the quality of their chinese printers as this is unacceptable for books at this price level. Haynes books are so bad, I won't buy another publication from them again. The 'last strike' was their book The Ford That Beat Ferrari. New expensive books shouldn't arrive with broken spines.

Well I hope my long winded review will be of some help in making your decision. I'm happy with my 'investment' but it will not appeal to those looking for books filled with glamourous /glossy / color double spread photos. This is a scholarly / technical treatise but is still reasonably easy to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome -- and a Fantastic Value, Too Jan 14 2004
Format:Hardcover
It's expensive. And not for everyone. And to own it and enjoy it requires time and energy, with a substantial payoff in the form of a richer, deeper existence on our planet Earth.

Am I talking about a Porsche? Yes, but also about Karl Ludvigsen's latest written masterpiece, Excellence was Expected. Simply put, this book is worth every penny, and more. Here's my advice:

If you like Porsches, get this book.

If you know someone who likes Porsches, get them this book.

Get this book for that design afficionado you know -- even if they're not into cars.
