Book Description

Perfect for fans of 'Girl with a Pearl Earring', this is a remarkable love story with a background of religious and political turmoil in Tudor England. The year is 1527. Hans Holbein makes his first visit to England, sent by the great Erasmus to paint Thomas More, courtier, scholar, patron, and his family. More's splendid house on the river in Chelsea is at the centre of Tudor society, frequented by distinguished astronomers, artists, politicians and men of religion, as well as wards of court, proteges and many others. Two visitors to the great house find themselves irresistibly drawn to Meg Giggs, one of More's foster daughters. John Clement -- dark, tall, elegant -- studying to be a doctor, is a man of compelling presence and mysterious background. The other man is Holbein himself -- warm, ebullient, radical and a painter of great renown. Meg finds herself powerfully drawn to these two wildly contrasting men. She will love one, and marry the other. A wonderful, rich novel, presenting the atmosphere of this Tudor household as rarely achieved, with an astounding ability to present to us the world of Holbein's paintings as well as a gallery of vividly realised characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book for a College Lit Class, Oct 14 2010
This review is from: Portrait Of An Unknown Woman (Paperback)
I was required to read this novel for my Renaissance Lit class. This is a fantastic version of the war of the roses. The characters are easy to understand and really make the history come alive! The character of Thomas More is revealed in a new and facinating light. If you are at all interested in Renaissance history or art (Hans Holbien is a major character), I would recommend this book. My copy came somewhat later than I would have liked, but was in excellent condition!

5.0 out of 5 stars Page-turner!, Sep 14 2010
This review is from: Portrait Of An Unknown Woman (Paperback)
I very much enjoy historical fiction and this book now tops my list of faviourites! I am a fan of Phillipa Gregory as well as Michelle Moran and now am adding more Vanora Bennett books to my personal library because of this book!
From beginning to end, the story is engrossing, never boring. There are enough twists and turns of the story to keep you satisfied and the writing style is very easy to follow. The book truly follows historical fact that includes past events, descriptions of buildings and surroundings, as well as Hans Holbein's works of art. I found it useful to find the works that are mentioned in the story to better follow along. (I found them online in image searches.) The description of these pieces are so vivid that the reader doesn't need to do this, it just made my experience reading this book that much more rewarding! As it is written during a time in English history that was filled with political and religious unrest, the reader gets the feel of how terrifying these times really were.
I will read this again and again!

1.0 out of 5 stars The narrator's voice ruined this book, July 23 2009

This review is from: Portrait of an Unknown Woman: A Novel (Audio CD)
Josephine Bailey speaks in such a monotone that I've avoided buying several books on CD because she's the narrator. I'm fascinated w/the reign of Henry VIII and historical fiction of that time period should make good listening. I thought that I would learn more about Thomas More and I did somewhat but I had difficulty listening for any length of time and had to keep turning the CD player off, thereby ruining momentum and continuity. This should have been a good blend of history and drama. Instead I found that I didn't like any of the characters and didn't care a whit about what happened to any of them. I will listen again perhaps after enjoying a glass of wine to mellow me in preparation for this woman's booooring voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Portrait of an Unknown woman, Nov 7 2008

Excellent mix of Fiction and history! Edge of your seat listening. I felt transported back to the 1500's and King Henry the VIII's court. Meg Giggs becomes as real as well researched historical back round. 15 hours - I found it difficult to turn off the cd's. This one has it all - Intrigue, history, romance, imagination and taste.
