From Publishers Weekly

This mediocre horror thriller is British writer James's fourth novel, but the first to be published in this country. When divorcee Alex Hightower's 20-year-old son Fabian is killed in an auto accident, strange things begin to happen, and Alex comes to believe the boy is trying to make contact with her. Thoroughly shaken, she does some investigating and learns that Fabian was not the charming adolescent she had believed him to be. In fact, he may have murdered an ex-girlfriend. A seance with a psychic only confirms Alex's fears that Fabian's angry spirit wants to return, with her help. Events build to an explosion of violence and death, but just when Alex feels free, there is a final horrifying development. Unfortunately, James relies on repetitious, stale effects: rooms grow cold rapidly, friends and strangers whisper in sinister tones, "He wants to come back." We are often told that Alex is frightened, but the writing is so mechanical that the reader rarely feels anything but irritation. 100,000 first printing; major ad/promo.

2.0 out of 5 stars So-so, May 1 2002
I got this from my public library and it looked so good on the surface. I read the whole thing but I am not at all sure who did what, when and why. What happened to David? Otto? Carrie? Phillip? And Alex????? It was a supernatural, ghost story, I think, but there were really no good answers on the last page. HEllo, Mother!!! I wish the reader from Australia would email me about this and other interesting books we like.

I enjoyed this book tremendously. The first page had me hooked and I read through the rest of the book with eagerness, wanting to know the outcomes. The main character loses her son in a car accident and sets out on a quest to determine what happened when she experiences some supernatural events. The events become more frequent and sinister leading her to a frightening conclusion. There were a few minor loose ends at the end of the book, which is why I only gave it a 4. I have read other books by Peter James and have become a fan of his.

5.0 out of 5 stars page turner!!!!, Mar 13 2006

This review is from: Possession (Paperback)
This book is such a page turner!! Its extremely spooky and scary but not stupid scary. And an easy read. Its not like those artsy fartsy type books that have a lot of mumbo jumbo in it that make you lose interest fast. I dont know how this book could get a low score. Must be weirdo's rating it because this is a great book.
