Product Description

From Library Journal

This is an absolutely marvelous rendition of Eliot's poetic classic, written for his godchildren and friends in the 1930s, which inspired the Broadway musical Cats. The tales of Mr. Mistoffelees the trickmaster, old Deuteronomy, a laid-back cat, Rum Tum Tugger, a contrary cat, and Macavity, the famous master criminal, are dramatized by Richard Briers, Alan Cumming, Nigel Davenport, Andrew Sachs, and Juliet Stevenson. Unfortunately, some material is repeated on the cassette's second side. Moreover, it comes with another tape that consists of excerpts of forthcoming Penguin audiobooks. This edition seems targeted more toward consumers than libraries.?James Dudley, Copiague, N.Y.

Times 20101223 These classic cat poems which sum up all the different kinds of cats there can be are given a delightful new look by bestselling Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler. Format: Paperback
It is a small book but lovable, with memorable characters in Macavity, who is a criminal cat but always gets away, or old Deuteronomy, who sleeps all the time in the middle of sidewalks and upon whom the working world has to rearrange itself so as not to disturb him, or Jennanydots, who teaches mice how to play music.
What makes the book so good is the humour and the occasional high brow vocabulary which forces children to pick up the dictionary for once.

If are a lover of cats, or have enjoyed the musical "Cats", or appreciate masterful poetry, or even a student of modernism, you will fall for "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" by T.S Eliot ("The Wasteland" "The Lovesong of J.Alfred Prufrock").
However, I especially recommend this book to parents who read to their children. Imagine an older and more conservative grand-master poet focusing his skills in rhythm, rhyme and content into a book of lyrics suitable for 5-year-olds. What you get is a book that not only has the sonority and imagination, combined with an appealing subject matter ( a diverse group of antropomorphized cats), for the children, but also is dense enough to be enjoyable repeated reading for the parent (Who of you still gets turned on by "Green Eggs and Ham"?), and challenging stimulation for the child.
If you have a son or daughter who loves cats, this book is a must buy!

When questioned where the famous play, "CATS" may have come from, I pointed out this book. It is my most favorite kitty-related collection of poetry. The artwork is by Edward Gorey, the famous magazine and book illustrator of the early 20th century. The poetry *about fourteen or fifteen titles* totally appeal to cat lovers of all kinds. The terrific tales of the Jellicles and the Gumbie Cat will leave readers giggling and searching for thier furry friends out "beside the hearth or in the sun or on my hat..." This book was a bit smaller than I had originally anticipated, but the plucky nature of the poetry left me thinking I bought it at a bargain! Truely a cat lover's book, I highly recommend it!

If you've read The Wastland or any of the other, more substantial poems by T.S Eliot, you may be shocked at Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. But don't be fooled, even in the simple subject matter there is genius in Eliot's writing.
This is the only poem book of Eliot's that I own and it's a great deal of fun to read. My favorite cat is Macavity. If you've seen the musical Cats (which I haven't), here's the inspiration. This is also a great first book to get younger people interested in poetry. The language Eliot uses is flowery and catchy, and the subject matter is centered on those cute furballs. Enjoy.

As a mystery author with my debut novel in its initial release that features a private investigator who is also a poet, I love this book. This verse collection is perhaps T.S. Eliot's most accessible work, and it provided the raw material for the fabulous musical CATS. I enjoy reading these poems, and I've enjoyed attending the musical. I think I saw CATS three times during its Winter Garden run, twice in Los Angeles, and once each in San Francisco and the Palm Springs area. CATS would not exist as a most enjoyable musical if the poet Eliot had not first jotted down OLD POSSUM'S BOOK OF PRACTICAL CATS.

This book is a must have for anyone that has ever seen the musical, even if you hated it, this book will change your views. I've seen the musical by Andrew Lyod Webber based on this book dozens of times (On video) and this book thourally explains it, you get more out of it! If you've never seen "Cats-Now and Forever", you should still purchess this book due to the fact the poems are cute, humerous and cleaver. It would be a great book to read to your children!

My title may be somewhat off, since people cannot have cats, who merely allow us mortals to be in their presence from time to time, as the need arises. TS Elliot knew cats well! For those who have been around cats, this book will delight you. I can't speak for those who have never been around cats, but can tell you that my nephew loved to have these stories read to him, . . . over and over again. Fun reading for kids, including us big kids.

This book contains the poetry that inspired Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical. Edward Gorey's illustrations do full justice to the characters, my two favorites are Macavity and the Jellicles. If you've ever wished you could be a cat, these are the cats you'll wish you could specifically be. Yes, each of them all in order! Purr-sonaly (couldn't resist!) I can't make up my mind between Old Deuteronomy or the Rum Tum Tugger. >^oo^<
