This review is from: The Post-Traumatic Insomnia Workbook: A Step-by-Step Program for Overcoming Sleep Problems After Trauma (Paperback)
This workbook is written by two experts in the area of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It provides excellent, informative education on trauma-related insomnia and sleep promotion, resources for monitoring symptoms over time, relaxation techniques, sleep scheduling, and cognitive behavioral techniques for challenging maladaptive thoughts related to sleep. It also includes a chapter on alleviating trauma-related nightmares using imagery rehearsal therapy.

The book is an easy read, and follows step-by-step procedures in a very straightforward way. It incorporates state of the art, evidence-based methods for treating posttraumatic insomnia. It is an invaluable resource for people who experienced psychological trauma and are afflicted with sleep problems as a result.

This review is from: The Post-Traumatic Insomnia Workbook: A Step-by-Step Program for Overcoming Sleep Problems After Trauma (Paperback)
I am a clinical psychologist and psychology professor, and I read everything I can manage about post-traumatic stress and PTSD. A colleague recommended that I read The Post-Traumatic Insomnia Workbook by Thompson and Franklin so that I could better understand the needs of traumatized patients who suffer from sleep disturbances. I found this book to have the most accessible structure and presentation of this material for clinicians, trainees, and clients. The approach is to use goal-setting, worksheets, and sleep logs in a successive approach to improving sleep hygiene and enhancing coping. More specifically, the workbook focuses on behaviors that negatively affect sleep quality, exercises for stress reduction and relaxation, counteracting hypervigilance, and avoids relying on quick fixes in favor of scientifically informed practices and sustainable lifestyle improvement. The techniques employed in this workbook support an excellent blending of overt behavioral change, modification of sleep-related cognitions, and the correcting of myths about sleep that might prove counterproductive. Of particular value to many are the sections on coping with trauma-related nightmares and a brilliant approach to addressing the effects of chronic pain on sleep. This is certainly the best resource of which I am aware for helping people whose sleep is impaired as a result of traumatic experiences.
