Product Description

Book Description

A profusely illustrated survey of posters from the French Revolution to the present. Posters are found in public places all over the world. They are usually visually striking, designed to attract the attention of passers-by and entice them to purchase a particular product or service, make them aware of a political viewpoint, or attend a specific event. This remarkable study is an overview of posters throughout history, as well as a representative survey of mass culture from the time of the French Revolution to 2000. Over 450 posters are reproduced here, 250 in full color, selected for both their historical import and their beauty. Author Max Gallo's informative text recapitulates the social and political currents of the day and places each poster in its historical context. The book also includes an essay on the development of poster art by art critic Carlo Arturo Quintavelle. 200 color and 200 black-and-white illustrations. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

First Sentence
They cover the walls that flank our streets; they are a part of the landscape of our cities, and if, suddenly, it was decreed that they must disappear, we would have the impression that all color had disappeared from the urban landscape, that the city walls had turned a mournful gray. Read the first page

4.0 out of 5 stars A NICE BOOK TO OWN., April 24 2007
By D. Blankenship - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Poster In History (Paperback)
This one sort of falls into the genre of "coffee table books." That being said, it is a well done coffee table book, and unlike so many others of this ilk, it actually has some interesting information to go along with the wonderful illustrations. I like Poster Art, always have and do enjoy having this book. The reason for the 4 star rating, is that I thought that with all the work that obviously went into this work, a wider variety could be given and the text expanded. It is a good book though and I do recommend it. If nothing else, it is quite interesting to just flip thought and enjoy the illustrations, or, if you like, just to set on your coffee table.
