Product Description

From Library Journal

This catalog documents the work of six American Indian women potters, their descendants, and other Native American women breaking new ground in clay?28 artists in all. Most of the artists profiled are from the Four Corners region of the Southwest, although Winnebagos, Sioux, and Osage are also represented. While affiliation with a reservation was not a criterion for inclusion in the show (Jean Bad Moccasin lives in the Chicago area), maintaining traditional methods of working was. The text discusses these methods and also traces the art's social context and role as cultural legacy. The catalog accompanies an exhibit at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., that will travel to the Heard Museum in Phoenix. The show's curator and the catalog's author is herself a potter who has previously written monographs on ceramic artists. The interviews and the high-quality illustrations make this book desirable for all art and ethnographic collections.?Margarete Gross, Chicago P.L.

Review

"An important reference bookthat draws a reader back time and time again. The lavish use of exquisitely detailed photos of clay masterpieces makes it seem more like an art gallery between hardcovers than simply a book." -- Morning Star-Telegram, Fort Worth, TX

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning book highlighting the innovators of Indian pottery, July 29 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pottery by American Indian Women: The Legacy of Generations (Hardcover)
Susan Peterson has done a fabulous job highlighting the matriarchs (Nampeyo, Maria Martinez, Lucy Lewis, Margaret Tafoya), matrilineal line (Fanny and Dextra Nampeyo, The Lewis Women, Lu Ann Tafoya, Nancy Youngblood Lugo), and avant-gard (Alice Cling, Nora Naranjo-Morse, Jacquie Stevens) women artists who have maintained and expanded this ancient art form into the 20th-century. This retrospective featuring innovators of Native American pottery is a beautifully-illustrated book and a must for anyone interested in this art form. You will not be disappointed. Buy it while you can in the clothbound edition.
