Review

This volume explores social and political forces that conspire to allow poverty to continue unabated. At the simplest level, poverty's sheer invisibility keeps it off the national radar. That's why Professor Raphael's work is so necessary. Poverty and Policy in Canada will strengthen our struggle to make poverty visible, to thereby make it politically real, and ultimately to make poverty history

5.0 out of 5 stars An important text for all Canadians from students to politicians alike!!, May 26 2007

This review is from: Poverty and Policy in Canada: Implications for Health and Quality of Life (Paperback)
Public debate on reforming the health system in Canadaprimarily focuses on health care. Little attention, however, has been paid to the role of broader determinants of health, such as income inequality, employment security, housing, income, food security, and social services. Yet, mounting public-health evidence demonstrates the negative health impacts of poverty. The latest book by Professor Dennis Raphael examines poverty in Canadaand the structural influences of Canadian society, economics and politics on health inequities. Though the evidence is both abundant and clear, Canada's effort at poverty prevention for the population as a whole remains poor allowing the income inequality gap to further widen. Poverty and Policy in Canada finally brings to the forefront the concerns of the poor and the role each Canadian plays by keeping a blind eye while the problem only proliferates.

Raphael clarifies that the aim is to put the reduction of poverty back on the national agenda by examining how government policy negatively impacts the health and quality of life of all Canadians. This rightly illustrates what research has verified- that poverty cannot be attributed to failings of individuals. This makes Poverty and Policy in Canada an important text that should be required reading prior to both federal and provincial elections!!!
