Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

"Episodic and bursting with incident, this sprawling memoir of an English boy's lonely childhood in South Africa during WW II pays moderate attention to questions of race but concerns itself primarily with epic melodrama," noted PW.

5.0 out of 5 stars brililant, Feb 24 2004
By gozilla queen (Vancouver, British Columbia Canada) - See all my reviews
I read this book for the first time back in 1991 whereupon I actually bought the book by looking at its cover. The old cover was a beautiful sunset view of the African dessert with a giraffe.

Nevertheless, the book engrossed me immidiately and within the first 20 pages it had made me laugh out loud and cry - no book has ever done that to me with such intensity before or since.

One complaint I have is with the back cover of the new editions of this book. Mr. Courtenay or the publishers have changed the name of one of the most crucial characters! On the back, it mentions a friend, Hymie, when in fact his name is Morrie. I was bitterly disappointed to read Tandia to find that the tone of the book has changed, and Mr. Courtenay decided to changed Morrie's name to Hymie without so much as an explanation.

Aside from that matter, the book is my all-time favourite and I have given it as a present to all my friends throughout the years.

5.0 out of 5 stars special to me, Aug 21 2009
By Zenobia (Canada) - See all my reviews
I read this book at the age of 18 after a co-worker at the bookstore I worked at recommended it to me. I remember was not really too sure if I would like it at the time - boxing, really? hmmmmm. Don't let that deter you as it very quickly became my favorite novel - that and the sequel Tandia. I'll have to re-read it soon as it has been at least 15 years since I have picked it up.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Power Of One, Dec 18 2006
By J. Estill "www.jimestill.com" - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The Power of One by Bryce Courtney is a novel about a young white boy growing up in aparthied South Africa. At 500 slow but captivating pages, it took almost 5 hours to read. Like all books that I read, someone suggested it was a good read. It was well written. Pure recreation. Highly recommended for fun but the business lessons are few and you need to stretch a bit to get them.

One quote from the book (used in a boxing context) was "Lead first with your head then with your heart". Does that apply to business? Without the logic and head, there can be no heart.

Another good quote was "I was cultivating a habit of winning. Winning is a state of mind that embraces everything you do, so I found I won in other things as well.". This quote definitely applies to my life philosophy.
