So so John Lennon (production),

Videos are pretty good for historical references (images wise). Some songs seem underproduced and muddled esp. Mind Games and Walls and Bridges songs. Some great tunes though- worthwhile combined with the videos. IH

A basic collection for the casual or novice Lennon fan,

This is a basic collection of 15 of John's solo hits; it is aimed at either the casual fan who only cares about the hit singles, or newbies who are not that familiar with Lennon's solo music and just want a taste.Of the CD's fifteen songs, all except Gimme Some Truth appear on the two previous single-disc JL compilations: THE JOHN LENNON COLLECTION (originally released on vinyl in 1982, then as an expanded CD version in 1990), and 1997's LENNON LEGEND: THE VERY BEST OF JOHN LENNON (which was also issued on DVD in 2003). COLLECTION has five songs that do not appear on POWER TO THE PEOPLE: THE HITS: Love, Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy), I'm Losing You, Dear Yoko, and the B-side Move Over Ms. L (since unavailable on CD until THE JOHN LENNON SIGNATURE BOX). LENNON LEGEND also contains Love and Beautiful Boy, plus four other tracks not found on P2TP: Mother, Working Class Hero, Nobody Told Me, and Borrowed Time. The DVD is a bit of a disappointment. Except for Gimme Some Truth, the videos are the same as on LENNON LEGEND; the only difference is that the P2TP DVD uses the original mixes of the songs, whereas many tracks on the LENNON LEGEND DVD were remixed and extended, often without fades; LEGEND also offers 5.1 surround sound, which the new DVD does not. I would recommend the LENNON LEGEND DVD, if it is still available, it has videos for the six songs mentioned above, and better sound, plus bonus features. For fans who want more Lennon, but don't want to spring for a box set, pick up WORKING CLASS HERO: THE DEFINITIVE LENNON from 2005. It is a two-CD set with 38 songs - all 15 P2TP selections plus 23 more - and it presents the tracks in the 2000-2005 remixes. As for this release, it's good for the casual or novice Lennon fan who just wants the bare bones, though the sound quality is excellent. Otherwise, unless you're a completist like me who has to have all the collections, skip it. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful

An alternative suggestion ....,

I think it's far less a case of "Yoko needs the money", and way more a lack of involvement by ANYONE with any sensibilities on how to manage a (sadly) finite catalog. As pointed out, yeah, this one adds "Gimme Some Truth" to tag the campaign, but omits SIX songs from the far superior "Lennon Legend" CD. Who is this 15-track single-disc aimed at ? People who looked at the 20-track single-disc "Lennon Legend" and thought it went too deep ? Come on, already ....

Here We Go Again,

Here it is, the "Yoko needs more money" release. I must say that the remastering sounds great, but really, how many John Lennon compilations of his solo material are really necessary? It's called "milking the Beatles completists." The collection of songs is nice, but they definitely are missing a few, such as Mother, Beautiful Boy and Nobody Told Me.The DVD is a nicely restored collection of his videos. If you do not have any of the many JL compilations already, this one would be my recommendation simply because the sound quality of the remastering is top notch! |
