Debbie Dillar presents a variety of practical literacy centres for the grade 3-6 classroom. The ideas are presented clearly with an emphasis on making sure that the teacher gives her/himself time to model, practise and model again the activities, before the students use the stations independently. I particularly like the emphasis on practice and student accountability at the centers, rather than worksheets to be corrected. Dillar writes a section on how each centre supports state tests, which is also applicable to Ontario EQAO testing. This book supports the philosophy of Fountas and Pinnell, S. Harvey, Patricia Cunningham and Janet Allen. Some practical cards ready to use to set up the stations (after being taught and modeled) are included in the appendix.

This book came highly recommended by another teacher at a Reading AQ course. She sold us on it and I couldn't wait to get it. FABULOUS! I've spent my March Break reading it every chance I get, and have taken pages and pages of notes so that I can implement this in my classroom as soon as I get back! The whole premise is to get the kids independently practicing skills that they have already been taught, in a meaningful way. It provides the perfect solution to what to do with the kids while I am teaching guided reading, or doing literature circles with a small group. An absolute must-read for any teacher of the Junior grades. I've been teaching for 15 years now and am ever amazed at how much else is out there!

This is an excellent resource for junior teachers. The suggestions and examples of literacy work stations will be of great value when I return to the classroom from my mat. leave. It's nice to have a resource that offers advice and focuses on the junior grades rather than on the primary grades for a change. I definitely recommend this resource to junior teachers.
