Elizabeth Gilbert's memoir of enlightenment gets the deluxe treatment at the hands of Glee creator Ryan Murphy, who bathes every scene in a golden glow. Unaccustomed to being alone, Liz (Julia Roberts) exits her marriage to Stephen (Billy Crudup, quite good) only to enter into an affair with an actor (James Franco, curiously uncomfortable), who introduces her to meditation. Just as her editor, Delia (Doubt's Viola Davis, making the most of a small role), longed to have a baby, Liz has longed to see the world. Delia persuades her to seize the day (plus, money presents no obstacle). First, she travels to Italy, where she noshes from Rome to Naples, making new friends along the way. Then, she heads to an ashram in India, where she meets a bride-to-be and a remorseful man (Richard Jenkins, heartbreaking), who nurture her altruistic side. Her sojourn ends in Bali, where she reunites with Ketut (Hadi Subiyanto, hilarious), the healer who first encouraged her to reassess her situation. While there, she befriends a single mother and a single father (No Country for Old Men's Javier Bardem) who falls for her charms. In an improvement over his version of Running with Scissors, Murphy combines two Oscar winners, two Oscar nominees, and four countries to follow one woman's path to fulfillment. Like Julie and Julia and How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Liz's story becomes more involving as she lets go of the superficial, but Murphy's movie still represents a triumph of escapism over spirituality. --Kathleen C. The Perfect Formula = Eat+Pray+Love,

The movie is based on a book written by Elizabeth Gilbert and it's actually based on her real-life experience. Julia Roberts plays Liz - she has a wonderful house, a good husband and a career but one night she just falls apart realizing that she's empty and her fire for life has gone out. She divorces her husband, who is heart broken and decides to leave America and travel to her dream destinations to find the meaning of life and heal her soul.First stop is Italy - where she enjoys the amazing food, learns the language and meets wonderful peopel with whom she becomes great friends. Next stop is India where she attends a spiritual program - here she learns to meditate and listen to her inner self. And last, she travels to Bali where she falls in love. The movie is beautifully filmed, all 3 locations are just amazing to watch. The actors are so down to earth that it's a pleasure to watch all of them. I think people will feel a very deep connection to this movie if they're in a similar place in their lives. And I hope that this movie will be an inspiration to just take that leap, to drop everything and travel to your dream destination, life is too short and Liz did what a lot of people wouldn't be able to do. She faced her fears and did what her heart told her to do. The story was emotional and funny and very touching. Liz meets some great characters along the way and every one of them is memorable and different from the other. It was a pleasure to watch and I would watch it again.

You guessed it, wife's turn to pick the movie. In the past this worked for the best, getting exposed to good movies I would not had picked otherwise. This time though I was itching for a magazine well before the movie was halfway through (I did not however: if my wife can be trooper and take IRON MAN 2 so can I).A woman in mid-life crisis ends her unfulfilling marriage to her equally immature and directionless husband for no other major reason. The divorce is messy with a lot of guilt to be distributed around. A brief (cougar-)affair ends equally badly so she embarks in a year-long journey to redefine herself. The journey starts from Italy where apparently she learns to appreciate life's little pleasures and how to enjoy them guilt-free. This part made me hungry for good Italian pasta with fresh tomato sauce and basil but little else. Having said that I have been to Naples and (with all due respect to my Napolitano friends), one can find much better-tasting pizza in Vancouver. By the way, when someone decides to accept her body no matter its imperfections and goes shopping for larger jeans, she does not then proceed to force the zippers of ...smaller sizes. India was next and it was a disaster. The guru she has traveled so far to meet is visiting the US and her disciples run her ashram like something between a hostel and a Scientology sweat-shop. She receives no enlightening guidance except some overused bromides from a Texan in his post-alcoholic guilt trip. I love Indian culture and have a great respect for Indian people. Unlike SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, this movie however will not make you want to visit this mesmerizing country. Finally, Bali where she meets again a toothless old medicine-man/palm reader. She copies some notes; she runs a short but effective charity fund; and she finds lust/love in the sad eyes of a Brazilian divorcee. What did she learn in the previous year: apparently nothing because she is about to run away from that relationship as well. Will she? Well, at that point point I could not care less. I gave it 2-stars solely for the travelogue images. For the record, my wife did not like it either.

traveling beyond one's borders can be dull,

Alright, I know this is a total chick flick and I was hoping at least the parts where Julia Roberts's teeth showed up would be good enough. Yet not even her enormous mouth can save this mess.You can fast-forward the first 29 minutes or so as it's all slow back story. I did not and now I'll never get those 29 minutes of my life back. Now once Ms. Roberts lands in Italy the movie starts to come to life. The friends she makes in Italy and the scenarios involving food, gestures, joining soccer fans in Napoli and exploring Rome make for a fantastic movie. That movie I wanted to see. Sadly, as soon as that gets started it's over and off to India. Landing in India we get that helter skelter taxi cab ride through the bizarre culture shock that is the Asian subcontinent. Then the movie reverts back to slow as molasses boredom in an ashram. Sorry, I just cannot handle navel-gazing hippy nonsense. That whole section of the flick I did fast-forward. Then onto Bali where the story of Julia's journey actually started in the "fillum." There it's pretty much hit and more miss as Javier No Country and her start a romance that is fine for what it is but involves way too much neurosis on Julia's part. So I'd say overall Eat is excellent, Pray is hideous and Love is just mediocre. Personally, I would have liked to have dumped Julia and stayed in Rome to follow her close friends--the Swedish woman and her Italian boyfriend. Now they were an infinitely more interesting couple than No Country for Bali and Erin Bali-no-vich. DVD has a director's cut and a making of extra with the director going on and on about how wonderful this tale was. Whatever. Sell the movie to the converted who love the book. As one who did not read the book, this is not a good movie on its own. At least the scenery in most of the places was nice to look at.
