Review

Praise for 'The Preacher': '[Lackberg] is an expert at mixing scenes of domestic cosiness with blood-curdling horror ! a must for white-knuckle junkies' Guardian 'An entertaining storyteller [who] keeps us guessing' Independent 'It's worth keeping an eye on Camilla Lackberg, whose second novel, The Preacher, is a cracker ! the plotting is immaculate and the villain proves to be thoroughly and inventively unpleasant' Independent 'Both chilling and thrilling' Sun 'A welcome addition to the swelling ranks of Scandinavian crime writers! a good, solid read' Irish Independent Praise for 'The Ice Princess': 'Another top-class Scandinavian crime writer reaches the British market' The Times 'A welcome new voice in crime fiction' Woman & Home 'Has a brooding quality redolent of its barren Swedish landscapes! intriguing and not a little disturbing' Irish Times 'Chilly, deceptive and lucid, just like the icy environment it describes' Literary Review 'Heart-stopping and heart-warming, 'The Ice Princess' is a masterclass in Scandinavian crime writing' Val McDermid "Camilla Lackberg is a more than welcome addition to the growing ranks of Scandinavian crime writers translated into English. With its sharp emotional nuances and psychological insight, 'The Ice Princess' builds in suspense as the author turns her clear eye on the buried secrets and contemporary relationships of a small, isolated community. I predict that Fjallbacka and its crimes and people will soon be as poplular here as they are in her native Sweden" Peter Robinson

Book Description

The second psychological thriller from No 1 bestselling Swedish crime sensation Camilla Lackberg. In the fishing community of Fjallbacka, life is remote, peaceful -- and for some, tragically short. Foul play was always suspected in the disappearance twenty years ago of two young holidaymakers in the area. Now a young boy out playing has confirmed this grim truth. Their remains, discovered with those of a fresh victim, send the town into shock. Local detective Patrik Hedstrom, expecting a baby with his girlfriend Erica, can only imagine what it is like to lose a child. When a second young girl goes missing, Hedstrom's attention focuses on the Hults, a feuding clan of misfits, relgious fanatics and criminals. The suspect list is long but time is short -- which of this family's dark secrets will provide the vital clue?

5.0 out of 5 stars good Swedish mystery, May 23 2010

I thoroughly enjoyed this book; I couldn't put it down. The translation also reads very well, which is not always the case for translated novels. (Apparently this English version is the work of Henning Mankell's translator.) The characters were well developed and the plot intriguing. I liked the book so much that I have ordered the author's other two mysteries.

This review is from: The Preacher (Paperback)
The first of lackberg's novel I'd come across; thoroughly enjoyed it with the multilayers of characters and the engaging narrative. I've since read her other work and have been enthusiastically recommending ALL of them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Reads like a soap opera....., May 11 2010

This review is from: The Preacher (Paperback)
Shallow plot, flimsy characters and absolutely no insight on the Swedish people or landscape. One of the worst "mistery" books I've read in a while.
