Book Description

Working in the E.R. of a small South Carolina hospital, Dr. Rhea Lynch has seen it all -- most of it at 2:00 a.m. But when an interracial couple is rushed in, beaten and bloodied by a mysterious hate group, the patients show symptoms of a fast-acting pulmonary infection Rhea has never seen before. Within hours, it proves fatal.

Soon more victims are rushed in, and an epidemic has Dawkins County in an icy grip of terror. As the puzzling illness claims more lives by the hour, Rhea begins to draw some startling conclusions about the nature of the illness . . . and about its connection to the military.

How could something like this have happened in this peaceful community? Can it be stopped? Every second counts as Rhea desperately tries to fit the pieces together -- and soon realizes that she is dealing with something bigger and more terrifying than she could ever imagine.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Sequel, Oct 21 2002
By
Hippolytos (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Prescribed Danger (Mass Market Paperback)
In this sequel to "Delayed Diagnosis" and the second in a new line of books featuring intrepid ER physician cum sleuth Dr. Rhea Lynch, Hunter hits the mark with this fast-paced and evocative medical thriller. A rash of hate crimes have swept Dawkins County, South Carolina, leaving behind in their wake a strange pneumonia-like virus afflicting people across race and socioeconomic lines..and with a 90% mortality rate.

Rhea stumbles across the epidemiological cause of the disease, but doesn't know how to treat it or how to get rid of it, other than an antibactieral cocktail she and another physician concoct. Rhea contacts Shirley, an English transport who went to med school with Rhea and her best friend Marisa (who returns from rehab very pregnant), who now works at the CDC. Together with Shirl, Rhea determines that the pneumonia is the result of a manmade streptococcus designed to be used in biological warfare. But who's behind it?

It's wonderful to see Rhea again. She's a smart, funny, independent, and educated woman who could be anyone's friend. Returning also are Miss Essie and her niece Arlana, Rhea's housekeeper, albeit in a limited role. Mark and Rhea grow closer, but could a new love for Rhea be on the horizon? Shirl is a fabulous new character, and it looks like, thankfully, she'll be in future books.

The only part of the novel that is a suspension of disbelief are those responsible for infecting the town. Frought with religious fervor and numerous governmental agencies, it's difficult to discern who actually did what and why. This is, however, a definite must-read for fans of Hunter and medical thrillers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Could this happen in my town?, Jun 9 2002

This review is from: Prescribed Danger (Mass Market Paperback)

I like Gwen Hunter's fictional female doctor, Rhea Lynch. I agree with another reviewer that Hunter's books contain graphic medical details, but to write Dr. Rhea's stories any other way would be to take the easy way out.

In this book, Dr. Rhea comes face to face with a fast-acting, virulent, and deadly virus that has her completely stumped. The first victims, an interracial couple, die within hours of being brought into Rhea's small emergency room in Dawkins County, South Carolina.

But, they aren't the only ones to die and before it's all over, Rhea must use every ounce of her impressive medical talent and survival skills to save her town, her staff and herself from the evil that lurks in the shadows.

Hunter keeps getting better. She and Dr. Rhea will make it to all the bestsellers' lists soon.

I'll be reading whatever Hunter writes...she's a keeper....blood, guts and all!

Enjoy!

1.0 out of 5 stars Could not get into this book, May 18 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Prescribed Danger (Mass Market Paperback)
I gave up on this one after about 80 pages or so. I didn't care for the main character, and I found this story so boring that it just didn't matter to me what happened at the end. The author also uses a lot of medical terms that I didn't understand. If you're a Robin Cook or Tess Gerritsen fan, then don't bother with this book.
